Design Project Manager (DPM) provides overall management of one or more specific engineering & design efforts to ensure that the client receives a project designed and engineered within the scope of the contract(s) to meet their needs on time and within budgets. Also, coordinates directly with project management, construction leadership team, either Austin’s or others’, to ensure constructability and support of construction operations. The DPM is responsible for the successful delivery of the engineering scope of work on a project, within the terms of the contract, on time, on budget and in service to the client and the business objectives of the project. Also, at times, acts as the liaison between the client and Austin. On engineering only project will function as the primary leader of the project, on design-build projects will function as the primary leader of the engineering effort, typically working under a Project Manager or Senior Project Manager.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, architecture, or related field with eight years or more of experience.
  • Three or more years of experience in multi-discipline project team leadership preferred. Field construction experience is a plus.
  • Professional Registration is preferred.
  • Prior job assignments typically include supervisory discipline engineer, discipline project lead, project engineer or project architect responsibilities.
  • Knowledgeable in project management software.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office.
  • Excellent communication, accounting, and organizational skills.
  • Must have valid driver’s license.
  • Must be able to travel to and work at the project site, this travel may be up to 40% of time.

Summary

Essential Functions

These essential functions will be project dependent and at the discretion of the manager

  • Leads project estimating and proposal preparation to the extent required (work effort / hours estimation) as assigned.
  • Enters all information for engineering meeting minutes, change notifications, and engineering change orders.
  • Responsible for overall budget/profitability, schedule, and quality for the engineering scope of work on projects assigned.
  • Coordinates with engineering department leadership to ensure resource planning, staffing and coordination necessary to successfully deliver the project.
  • Provides overall project related leadership to engineering resources assigned to the project, including communication of scope, deadlines, requirements, etc.
  • Developed the engineering portions of the project execution plan and supports the creation and maintenance of other elements of the project execution plan.
  • Coordinates overall engineering effort across disciplines, reviews technical design conditions and makes recommendations to the responsible engineer related to design improvement concepts, manages work effort ensuring the most efficient distribution of hours and drives the project team.
  • Documents all changes in engineering scope, ensures that the General Manager, project manager (or client) understands the consequent changes in cost and time and that the project manager (or client) authorizes the changes, then coordinates all changes between the various departments as well as the field.
  • Holds regularly scheduled (usually weekly or daily) project status check in meetings to ensure that project is progressing, and that the project team is coordinated.
  • Provides input to the Manager of Engineering and Design or the discipline department chief on the performance of individuals on their project teams.
  • Supports proposal efforts as assigned.
  • Assists in defining work packages and schedule / budget development
  • Assists in overall project documentation, including day to day reporting, and regular reporting to the client and internal, as well as effective and productive use of any project management or document management software platforms required by the assigned project(s).
  • Assists and may lead, if assigned, RFI process, submittal process, change management, etc.
  • Creates internal and client reports as assigned / required.
  • Attend Project Progress Review meetings
