We are seeking a Deputy Press Secretary to join our team. The Deputy Press Secretary will be a key part of a fast-moving team helping to drive attention and coverage of the organization’s priorities and work both nationally and at the state-level. The role will require after hours and weekend work when needed, as well as up to 25 percent travel. The role will report to the National Press Secretary and is categorized at the manager level.
This is a full-time hybrid position based in our Washington, DC, office. All Giffords staff members must be vaccinated against the COVID-19 virus with limited exceptions as required by federal, state, and local law.

Duties + Responsibilities
Monitors news coverage, oversees the gathering and distribution of daily clips to Giffords staff and partners
Identifies coverage trends and flags opportunities for potential engagement
Collects media metrics for all Giffords media activity
Maintains, updates, and creates press lists for topics, locations, and experts
Fields incoming media requests from local and state media outlets
Drafts press releases, op-eds, pitch notes, and other memos as asked.
Prepares staff for media interviews
Identifies opportunities to strategically amplify the voices of local surrogates. Writes op-eds and letters to the editor; pitches surrogates to local media, develops creative opportunities to feature their views through social media and at events
Collaborates with press team to develop an ongoing earned media strategy that will elevate the organization’s experts and ideas
Proactively planning for upcoming events, anniversaries, including developing media plans and drafting statements.
Support Giffords internal inclusion, diversity, equity, and anti-racism (IDEA) work
Performs other duties as assigned
Required knowledge, skills + experience
At least 3-5 years of relevant work experience
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Familiarity with media list building and monitoring software
Experience pitching media, placing stories, and helping prepare staff for interviews
Thorough knowledge of GSuite and WordPress
Demonstrated problem-solving skills and ability to be flexible
Extremely well organized with superior attention to detail
Ability to manage multiple projects, work efficiently in a fast-paced environment under tight deadlines, and work independently
Strong interpersonal skills, sense of humor, and ability to work well on a team
Entrepreneurial spirit, strong problem-solving, and creative thinking skills
Flexibility and an openness to evolving responsibilities
Experience messaging with cultural competency and has the ability to examine GIFFORDS media and communications materials through an equity and inclusion lens
Experience in a Congressional office, campaign, or in an issue-based organization
Salary + benefits
The salary range for this position is $60,000-$75,000 annually, with the exact salary depending on experience. Competitive benefits include employer-funded health, dental, and vision insurance; health, transit, and parking flexible spending accounts; 401k plan with 4% employer match; reimbursement for cell phone and monthly wifi; stipend, paid TSA PreCheck, 25 days of PTO annually plus paid week closure at the end of the calendar year; and ten paid federal holidays.
