Department Head

Summary: Responsible for the effective and profitable merchandising of all products and the supervision of any sales associates assigned to his/her section of the retail store. This position is required to work a minimum of a 45-hour workweek. Weekends and evening hours will be part of the regular work schedule.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities to include but not limited to:

  • Assures the adequacy of displayed products (and reserve supplies) and optimum use of display space. Arranges display.
  • Reviews assigned stock and item turnover, recommends reorders and/or new/substitute items and, as authorized , places orders with suppliers.
  • Checks delivered merchandise for proper order fulfillment and billing; thereafter approving same for payment.
  • Trains assigned assistants, directs their work and evaluates their performance.
  • Makes recommendations for sectional improvement including related special sales, better methods for accomplishing tasks, and customer or vendor relations.
  • Oversees departmental customer service to ensure all customers are approached and offered assistance by sales people in a timely manner.
  • Treats all customers courteously.
  • Shows genuine interest towards customers’ needs and makes every effort to close sale.
  • Encourages additional sales with helpful attitude and suggests related items.
  • Makes every effort to locate or obtain materials for customers.
  • Keeps aware of out-of-stock items and informs sales people.
  • Keeps sales people informed regarding advertised items and sale prices.
  • Handles customer complaints courteously and with sincere concern.
  • Utilizes price books and product catalogs.
  • Follows proper procedures when taking special orders.
  • Oversees the writing of all departmental estimates.
  • Confers with supervisor on special pricing on estimates.
  • Oversees large or unusual sales and situations.
  • Determines priorities and plans department work accordingly.
  • Works with supervisor to schedule department personnel to ensure adequate coverage.
  • Communicates and enforces company policies and procedures.
  • Advises supervisor of any personnel problems and follow-ups as directed.
  • Evaluates and counsels associates.
  • Orders and receives department merchandise in coordination with Store Receiver.
  • Maintains department displays and merchandise.
  • Coordinates orders with supervisor and outside vendors.
  • Follows proper purchasing procedures.
  • Reviews upcoming advertising and makes recommendation for purchase of merchandise.
  • Maintains an organized, clean, and safe special order storage area.
  • Supervises the stock keeping ensuring that all merchandise is promptly and properly stocked and priced.
  • Oversees the inspection and restocking of customer returns
  • Follows proper computer procedures.
  • Maintains computer and other inventory-related equipment and informs supervisor of any problems.
  • Maintains a safe and clean work area.
  • Follows all safety and security procedures.
  • Maintains a friendly work atmosphere.
  • Communicates and cooperates with all departments and locations.
  • Maintains a professional attitude.
  • Maintains professional appearance.

As with all other jobs other duties may be assigned. Department Heads may be required to temporarily work at other store locations. Department Heads must also comply with all provisions listed in their individual compensation packages.

Supervisory Responsibilities

Directly supervises 2 or more associates assigned to a department. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s polices and applicable Federal and State Laws. Responsibilities include training associates, addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Qualifications

Education And / Or Experience

Minimum high school graduate with 3-5 years of related sales (preferably retail) experience, demonstrated supervisory capability, and expertise regarding department products. Must be dependable, well organized, and personable speak clearly.

Language Skills

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to read and comprehend correspondence and memos. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and group situations to customers, associates and venders.

Mathematical Skills

Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percents, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply basic algebra and geometry.

Reasoning Ability

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to solve problems and deal with a variety of situations where only limited standardizations exist.

The associate is required to frequently sit, stand, walk, hear, or talk. The associate is occasionally required to climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The associate must regularly lift and / or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and / or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
