Position Profile

Job Title: Dean of Students

Reports to: Principal

General Responsibilities

The Dean of Students is a professional administrator who reports directly to the Principal. The Dean of Students is responsible for fostering a positive and productive school environment by ensuring compliance with the school’s conduct expectations, promoting respectful and ethical behavior, and coordinating campus safety. The Dean also promotes good attendance rates and identifies students with attendance or disciplinary issues. The Dean of Students works cooperatively with the administrative team, counselors, teachers, staff, students, and parents toward a positive and safe school environment.

Areas Of Responsibility

  • Lead in ensuring the mission, vision, and values are reflected in daily school operations.
  • Promote and maintain an environment that nurtures the school's Catholic identity.
  • Promote a culture of dignity and respect for each member of the school community.
  • Oversee all matters of student attendance.
  • Conduct interventions for attendance concerns and enforce attendance policies.
  • Share with the Principal the responsibility for protecting students' health and welfare.
  • Coordinate efforts to create positive and productive student behavior.
  • Review and enforce discipline policies and procedures; maintain discipline records.
  • Work with teachers on classroom management and provide professional development as necessary.
  • Support and meet with students, parents, and teachers in the restorative process.
  • Maintain appropriate communication with family, community, law enforcement, and judicial systems.
  • Convene the Discipline Board as needed and oversee Student Behavior Contracts.
  • Collaborate with the Principal in major discipline cases potentially involving suspension or expulsion; ensure day-to-day discipline of students.
  • Review and revise the Student Handbook annually.
  • Work with the Principal to ensure a safe school environment and oversee campus supervision.
  • Work with building security personnel to maintain a safe environment during school hours and events.
  • Supervise classrooms, hallways, restrooms, cafeteria, and other school locations daily.
  • Plan, execute, and document safety drill training and drills for staff and students.
  • Coordinate student parking procedures and locker use.
  • Supervise extracurricular activities such as athletic events and school dances.
  • Counsels individual students and, when necessary, work with the Counseling Department to make appropriate referrals for testing, guidance, or psychological counseling.
  • Make recommendations for program, policy, and procedure revisions affecting students' school lives.
  • Oversee the school’s Substance Abuse Programs.
  • Supervises and evaluates the Dean’s administrative assistant.
  • Collaborate with the Assistant Principal: Academics to foster academic achievement and ensure academic integrity.
  • Protect the rights and maintain confidentiality regarding school personnel, students, and general school matters.
  • Stay current in educational research and best practices.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Commitment to Catholic education and youth development.
  • Knowledge and experience in developing and implementing restorative practices programming for students.
  • Leadership in building a culturally responsive school community.
  • Knowledge of trends related to drugs, mental health, diversity, equity, and restorative practices.
  • Ability to coordinate and manage multiple tasks and deadlines.
  • Effective communication skills across all modes in a professional manner.
  • Ability to visually supervise students and assess safety concerns.
  • Sound judgment in making decisions regarding student safety and welfare.
  • Ability to perform tasks with minimal supervision and maintain effective relationships with the public, students, and co-workers.
  • Physical ability to move about the school building and environment.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and independently on projects.
  • Ability to establish cooperative working relationships with diverse individuals, including faculty, staff, students, volunteers, and the public.
  • Effective under pressure, flexible, and capable of producing quality work within tight deadlines.
  • Ability to handle sensitive matters with discretion and tact.
  • Sensitivity, knowledge, and understanding in building rapport and trust with students, families, employees, and diverse communities.
  • Skill in facilitating committee meetings, preparing presentations, and speaking in public forums.
  • Willingness to work a flexible schedule, including some evenings and weekends.
  • The ability to speak Spanish is a plus.

Qualifications

The Dean of Students should hold a minimum master's degree with three to five years of experience in a high school setting with an Illinois State Board of Education Professional Educator Licensure. An endorsement in administration is preferred. Classroom teaching experience preferred. The Dean of Students must understand, embrace, and be able to articulate and model the mission, vision, and values of Boylan Catholic High School.
