Full-Time and Permanent; Exempt; 7.33 Hours/Day; 200 Days/Year; 10 Months/Year

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree and course work or endorsement in administration and supervision preferred.
  • Continuing Contract Status.
  • Communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Tuberculin Skin test certifying that the individual is free of contagious tuberculosis.
  • Must be in possession of appropriate Virginia Teaching Certificate.
  • Above average amount of walking, bending, standing, stooping and lifting.
  • In addition to normal everyday risks, secondary school work involves exposure to possibility of physical confrontation with students.
  • Work is performed in school and requires no unusual demand.
  • Basic knowledge of school law (state and local).
  • Leadership and management skills necessary to work with students, teachers, parents, and administrators.
  • Knowledge of the organization and functions of a public school system.
  • Knowledge of instructional best practices.
  • Knowledge of effective classroom management strategies.
  • Knowledge of district policies and procedures.
  • Ability to prepare reports and keep accurate records.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with parents, teachers, administrators, and community agencies.
  • Ability to follow directions and procedures.
  • Ability to use Synergy© and other computer applications to effectively manage paperwork on students’ dispositions.
  • Ability to de-escalate tense situations.
  • Knowledge of, and ability to demonstrate, conflict resolution methods.

Nature of Position

  • The dean of students is a teaching position located in the school building. An employee in this position is responsible for the discipline of students and contacting parents regarding disciplinary matters. This involves reviewing referrals from staff and acting upon behavior that warrants disciplinary action. This also involves assisting classroom teachers with best practices in classroom management. The employee must attend work on a regular basis and is responsible directly to the principal or designee.
  • This is an annual appointment. Applications must be submitted each year and those selected will remain in the position. Those not selected will be reassigned to a classroom teacher position within the appropriate endorsement area(s).
  • Assess and resolve all behavior problems that disrupt the learning process or safety of students of staff.
  • Confer with parents and students relating to behavioral adjustment and academic goals.
  • Observe classes to offer feedback to teachers to actively engage students in the learning process.
  • Assist in the implementation of the school discipline plan.
  • Assist with providing a safe and secure school environment.
  • Assist security guards, teacher, bus drivers and bus monitors in matters of student discipline.
  • Assist/coordinate orderly cafeteria operations.
  • Assist in the coordination of bus drivers and bus monitors to assure safe transportation to and from school.
  • Assist students and staff with locker distribution and monitoring.
  • Assist with fund raising activities.
  • Assist with after school athletic events.
  • Assist with emergency situations when needed.
  • Assist the principal/assistant principal in other areas as directed.
  • Assist with fire drills, lockdown drills and tornado drills.
