General Definition Of Work

The Dean works collaboratively with the building administrative team, Security Team and the Student Services team to promote and maintain a climate that is conducive to student learning emphasizing mutual respect and safety. The Dean promotes good attendance rates and identifies students with attendance or disciplinary issues. The Dean addresses attendance and disciplinary issues and fosters a collegial relationship with staff pertaining to student conduct and discipline.

Essential Functions

  • Utilizes District Disciplinary Policies to Ensure Building Safety and Security and works with the Principal to establish a safe and secure learning environment for students.
  • Develops and administers disciplinary procedures in accordance with district policies and state laws; receives referrals and confers with students, parents, teachers, community agencies, and law enforcement; responds to and resolves parent, student, and staff concerns and complaints; serves on discipline or expulsion panels as assigned.
  • Supervises students on campus before and after school; monitors students during lunch
  • Establishes standards of conduct and stops inappropriate behavior consistently while maintaining student dignity.
  • Works collaboratively with Security Personnel as the point of contact for student discipline and attendance issues including skipping and tardies.
  • Actively creates and participates in school projects and initiatives that promote orderly behavior throughout the school.
  • Promotes positive behavior expectations throughout the school and administers student discipline consequences in accordance with the district’s disciplinary policy.
  • Develops plans for emergency situations in collaboration with other administrators, staff, and public safety agencies; directs the work of yard duty staff and crossing guards; plans and debriefs emergency drills; updates the school safety plan.
  • Prepares and maintains a variety of district, county, state, and federal records and reports; directs preparation of records and reports by staff.
  • Conducts safety drills and submits reports meeting all established deadlines.
  • Leads the school Attendance Team and follows protocol for collecting, documenting and communicating regarding student attendance.
  • Identifies students with poor attendance and identifies appropriate interventions to address issues.
  • Monitors and organizes attendance functions; prepares letters, calls parents, and attends meetings as needed, regarding absent or tardy students; provides leadership for attendance improvement efforts.
  • Creates and presents reports related to attendance and discipline in the school.
  • Collaborates appropriately with the school personnel, parents, and community agencies regarding needs and concerns of students.

Education And Experience

  • At least three (3) years of successful teaching experience.
  • Successful experience as a school administrator or supervisor is strongly preferred.
  • Successful experience in the areas of human resources and human relations.
  • Must hold or be eligible for a teaching license issued by the Virginia Board of Education with PreK-12 Administration and Supervision (or equivalent) endorsement.
