The Dean of Student Life and Culture will foster a caring, supportive and inclusive community and uphold high behavioral expectations for students, staff, and families by ensuring fidelity to the Hyde Five Words and Principles, adherence to policies and protocols as specified in school handbooks and the implementation of the student culture rubric. The Dean of Students works in close collaboration with the School Counselor and the Director of Family Education Department to help ensure holistic student success.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities
Communicate explicit behavioral expectations for students and draw on expertise in discipline and motivation to uphold these expectations through logical consequences that emphasize reflection and continuous learning
Coordinate and supervise accountabilities, including but not limited to morning and after school detention
Use every interaction with families to communicate and reiterate explicit family expectations and establish positive relationships with families through active engagement with the Family Education Department and parent leadership, participation in student and family conferences, and by helping to plan events that allow opportunities for teachers, students and families to build community
Plan and execute coaching strategies for staff around behavior management, student culture and family engagement, incorporating the creation of individualized goals that are strategic, measurable, action--oriented, realistic and time-bound
Plan and execute professional development activities around classroom management and student culture systems
Work with the leadership team to ensure a structured school environment, including enforcing expectations for arrival and dismissal, recess and lunch, and hallway transitions
Maintain accurate and comprehensive records of student discipline, conflict and mediation, staff and family communication, and formal and informal observations; use this variety of data to inform decision--making
Proactively circulate throughout classrooms and hallways and supervising breakfast, lunch, recess, and dismissal to gain valuable context on student behavior, fidelity to procedures and to reinforce explicit behavioral expectations
Regularly assess student culture and school climate through formal and informal structures such as analysis of student and staff attendance, and the NYC DOE Safety Survey and interactions with all stakeholders
Assist the Child Study Team in the effective creation and implementation of individual behavior plans
Gather, identify and leverage all resources to create a learning focused environment
Collaborate with other leadership team members to create and implement student orientation programs
Support school leadership with implementing and maintaining Hyde Signature Practices
Conduct problem-solving and re-entry meetings related to student discipline
Conduct home visits as needed
Ensure completion of student incident reports following disciplinary referrals and ensure that teachers follow--up with students
Submit regular discipline reports to the Head of School
Ensure proper documentation for all discipline issues including suspension letters, Power School teacher anecdotal logs, etc.

Requirements

3-5 years professional leadership experience in a school setting
Previous experience supervising and leading diverse teams and programs
Ability to work on weekends as needed
Maintain confidentiality and apply discretion in all communications and activities
BA required, Master’s Degree in related field strongly preferred
Be dependable and have excellent follow-through
