Position Description
The Dean of Student Culture and Community is an educator who works with administrators, teachers, behavior specialists, and other school stakeholders to create a supportive and structured learning environment for students. They establish systems and practices that promote high academic and behavioral expectations while fostering a genuine sense of belonging. The position requires an empathetic and skillful teacher who can inspire student learning and responsibility, can establish powerful yet appropriate connections to students and families, and can support systems for student discipline in a balanced and consistent way. The position is best suited for a courageous educator who seeks to understand students and staff, communicates well with all school stakeholders, and has a vision for building accountability and community.

Compensation
Salary is based on the GPEA CBA, which may or may not recognize previous professional teaching experience. GPEA Members are also eligible for a comprehensive and competitive benefits package including health/dental/vision/life and long-term disability insurance. Membership in the Michigan Public Schools Employee Retirement System www.michigan.gov/ors. In addition to the salary this position will include a “Teacher on Special Assignment” (TOSA) of $4652 for work outside the contractual day that will include summer planning.

Primary Qualifications
- Valid Michigan Teaching Certificate (related academic endorsements preferred).
- Commitment to a core mission that everyone learns, and ability to translate that mission into equitable behavior and community outcomes for all students.
- Ability to develop strong relationships with staff and students from diverse backgrounds.
- Ability to develop and organize systems of intervention for significant behavioral issues.
- Experience applying Restorative Practices in school settings.
- Passion/capacity for inspiring traditionally marginalized or disenfranchised student populations.
- Strong leadership, organizational and communication skills.
- Highly-developed planning and time management skills.
- Prior experience in a leadership or administrative role.
- At least five years (classroom) teacher experience, preferred.
- Culturally Responsive certification, School Turnaround Specialist certification or similar endorsements, preferred.
The Director of Student Culture and Community will partner with school administrators, behavior interventionists and school social workers to:
- manage entry-level student attendance and behavior issues.
- be a highly-visible presence during school hours, to support a structured and proactive environment.
- support faculty in developing positive relationships and community in classrooms, particularly related to issues of discipline, student management, and a sense of belonging.
- facilitate conflict resolution and restorative sessions for students.
- provide direct social/social emotional skill instruction to students in small group settings.
- coordinate basic disciplinary and behavioral interventions (in partnership with existing intervention programming).
- manage systems for academic and SEL support for students who are separated from school.
- assist with oversight of larger student gatherings (e.g. assemblies, lunch, hallways, etc.).
- coordinate and manage a student leadership team to integrate student voice into school processes.
- establish school practices and rituals that inspire students to connect and invest in the school community.
- Systematically monitor program activities; use findings to evaluate and refine the quality of instructional and programming outcomes.
- assist teachers, parents and students in the creation and implementation of individual behavior plans.
- work with Student Services staff to develop individualized plans for students who struggle academically and/or behaviorally.
- assist with PBIS systems within the school.
- design and implement an Academic Learning Center to meet student academic and behavioral needs.
- assist with reentry meetings when students return from out-of-school disciplinary action.
- develop and oversee orientation programming for students focused on community-building and common expectations.
- implement recognition assemblies, parent academies, community meetings and other school-wide culture building activities.
- participate in processes for recruiting/screening/interviewing professional staff.
- ability to assist with oversight and community-building at selected athletic and extracurricular activities, preferred.
- perform other duties as assigned.
- Prolonged periods standing and walking throughout school and classroom.
- Must be able to lift up to 45 pounds at a time.
- Must be able to assist students who have physical difficulties.
- Occasional bending, kneeling, sitting, standing, and climbing stairs.
- Prolonged periods sitting and working on the computer to complete necessary paperwork.
