Description

Under general supervision, serves as a first line working supervisor, leading a maintenance crew in the daily park tasks of maintaining and beautifying the parks, street medians, rights-of-way, and other Town property. Helps in scheduling work, hiring, evaluating, and disciplining.

Examples of Duties

  • Oversees the day-to-day work activities of laborers within the Parks Services Division to include training, assigning work tasks, and monitoring and inspecting the work of laborers; and provides direction and guidance in work tasks.
  • Assists, as directed, and makes recommendations to management in executing personnel/employee related tasks to include hiring, training, setting worker goals and objectives, scheduling work crews, evaluating, counseling, and disciplining employees.
  • Performs continual inspections of operational and personnel functions and activities to identify any inefficiencies and ineffectiveness and makes recommendations to management for corrective workable solutions.
  • Trains workers in the safe and proper operation of equipment and tools and performing job tasks and ensures workers wear appropriate safety equipment.
  • Instructs workers in the proper and most expedient method to accomplish assignments.
  • Ensures employees conduct daily vehicle inspections and preventative maintenance (including washing, checking and servicing) of all equipment and vehicles.
  • Identifies and reports hazards and liability exposures and immediately takes action for corrective measures.
  • Makes special reports and recommendations to the supervisor as needed.
  • Recommends items, supplies, tools, equipment, and other material needed for park operations.
  • Assists supervisor in determining purchasing needs for upcoming projects and secures price quotes for purchase of equipment, supplies, materials, etc.
  • Informs supervisor of potential hazards, problem areas, public inquiries and the status of other work activities.
  • Performs the duties of Maintenance Workers, as required, tasks to include: operating commercial landscape and turf care equipment; planting, fertilizing, cultivating, selecting and shaping, pruning, watering, mulching, and removing trees, shrubs, flowers, etc.; applying herbicides, insecticides and pesticides; calibrating and maintaining spraying systems; interpreting labels; keeping an inventory of chemicals and records of applications made; collecting and disposing of trash in mowing areas, right-of-way areas, median areas, Town property; installing and repairing irrigation systems; repairing leaks in control lines and piping; repairing controllers; checking irrigation systems on a continuous schedule for control of proper operations; repairing irrigation heads and valves; assembling, installing, maintaining and inspecting playground and park equipment.
  • Adheres to personnel, safety, and department policies and procedures.
  • Keeps track of payroll records of employees.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Basic Qualifications

  • Must have a High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED).
  • Must be able to complete and pass the written test for a valid Texas CDL "A" or "B" Driver's License within 90 days of hire. You must provide proof of your scheduled driving test appointment with the Texas Department of Public Safety to your supervisor within 90 days from the day you pass the written test. Your driving record must be in compliance with Town policy.

Work Experience

  • Must have two (2) years of related commercial landscape, turf care, irrigation systems, and equipment operation and maintenance experience and one year of supervisory or leading a work crew.

Must submit to and pass a post-offer, non-regulated drug test and thorough background checks (including criminal history).

Desired Qualifications

Knowledge / Skills / Abilities:

  • Must have a good working knowledge of proper turf, landscape, and irrigation procedures, light to heavy landscape and related equipment, and safety procedures.
  • Must be able to exercise good judgment; make competent decisions; handle multiple projects; prioritize and organize work assignments; meet deadlines; and work well under pressure and stress.
  • Must have good leadership, organizational, supervisory, problem solving, and training skills.
  • Must have good hand/foot/eye coordination to operate and repair equipment and vehicles.
  • Must follow oral and written directives and be able to maintain an effective and pleasant working relationship with employees, contractors, and the general public.
  • Must be able to work extensive hours, as needed.

Physical Abilities

  • To perform the essential functions of the job must be able to talk, read, see, walk, and hear.
  • Perform strenuous physical activities to include, exerting up to 100 lbs. of pressure; lift, push, pull, and carry heavy objects to include trimmers, mowers, tree limbs, and other equipment and supplies up to 100 lbs. several times a day. Will shovel; crawl; bend; kneel; dig holes for several hours per day; climb on and off equipment; operate vibrating equipment; work indoors, underground, outdoors, in confined spaces, and work in adverse environmental conditions to inclement weather such as rain, sleet, snow, heat, sun exposure, chemicals and exposure to insects, noxious plants, and snakes.
