Job Description – essential functions/core

At Plumb, our Controllers are resourceful problem solvers and strategic, business-minded professionals. Controllers are critical thinkers and are calm under pressure. Specific examples of a typical day/week are as follows:

  • Controller – Responsible for collecting, cleaning and transforming data, as well as conducting statistical analysis and data visualization to uncover trends, patterns and correlations. Your insights will inform strategic business decisions and drive operational improvements. Includes financial planning and analysis, budgeting, forecasting, and financial reporting.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to identify business problems and opportunities where analysis can provide valuable insights and solutions.
  • Assist with implementation of software to be utilized internally – accounting, CRM, Task Management, etc.
  • Assist client teams with project work as needed.
  • Conduct financial analysis to support strategic decision -making and business planning initiatives.
  • Cultivate a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement within the finance function.
  • Quality Assurance – Ensuring that products and services meet the highest standards of quality and compliance with best practices.
  • Develop and implement quality assurance processes, conduct reviews, and drive continuous improvement initiatives to enhance product quality, customer satisfaction, and operational efficiency.
  • Collaborate with Operations Director to develop quality assurance program.
  • Perform detailed examinations of financial statements and accounting records (balance sheet workbooks, etc.) to identify areas of improvement and increase accuracy for financial records.
  • Identify potential risks, discrepancies, or irregularities in financial reporting on operational process.
  • Training Management – Key role in developing, implementing, and maintaining training materials and resources to support the learning and development needs of our division/employees. Make sure your teams are engaged, trained, capable and providing the best customer service to your client base.
  • Organize and maintain a centralized repository of training materials and resources.
  • Assist in coordination and delivery of training sessions, workshops, and events.
  • Prioritize team workload, keeping utilization metrics consistent with set goals.
  • Evaluate training effectiveness and make recommendations for improvements.
  • Set SMART Goals for team members in alignment with individual needs to ensure professional growth and success within the team.
  • Collaborate with Controllers and Operations Director to assess training needs, develop learning objectives and implement training programs.
  • Stay current in industry trends and best practices.

Controllers are experts at balancing detailed projects and tight deadlines. Controllers analyze challenges and devise out-of-the-box solutions. Some areas where this position can contribute are as follows:

  • From Manager to Leader- Train, develop and coach staff. Assist in career mapping and personalized training plans to help motivate and foster your team’s success.
  • Process Improvement – Develop and implement policies and procedures that keep the team motivated, productive, and highly utilized.
  • Manage Expectations- Be able to customize the internal process to meet their specific goals and needs. Ensure division financial objectives are met or exceeded by forecasting requirements, preparing annual budgets, scheduling expenditures, and analyzing. Set clear objectives and manage expectations through proactive communication, thorough financial analysis, and problem solving.
  • Think Plumb- Bring new ideas to the table that add value to our Plumb community: focus on responsive solutions that help manage client and team expectations. Model Plumb Principles in action to staff and instill these principles into your team.


Software Skills

The following software systems are used frequently, and extensive experience is preferred:

  • ERP Software experience required.
  • NetSuite or Sage experience a plus.


Skillsets and Recommended Requirements

We are looking for a candidate who can handle the managerial aspects of getting the job done while streamlining processes to ensure profitability and the growth of your team going forward. Here are the primary skillsets and characteristics a successful candidate will possess:

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or related field.
  • 3+ years’ experience as a controller, 2+ years’ experience supervising a team of 3 or more accounting professionals.
  • Organized, detail-oriented, and ability to be a task master if/when necessary.
  • Meticulous attention to detail and accuracy in analyzing financial records and documents.
  • Strong problem-solving skills with ability to identify issues, evaluate alternatives and propose solutions.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience working on multiple projects simultaneously and supporting remote teams.
  • Expert GAAP knowledge.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team-oriented environment, demonstrating flexibility and adaptability.
  • 2+ years’ experience interacting with executive teams or business owners is preferred.
  • Intermediate to advanced computer skills working with various office equipment, computers and programs including databases, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Excel.
