Department:Engineering Reports to: Construction Foreman

Salary Range:$21.53 - 23.55

General Purpose:

Under the general supervision of the Construction Foreman and performs avariety of civil construction projects including streets, storm water facilities, and water and sewer line construction.This position requires the ability to operate a variety of city equipment and trucks utilized in construction, maintenance and repair activities.This is a safety sensitive position and is subject to random drug testing.Safety sensitive positions must comply to federal regulations where marijuana still remains illegal. Possession of a medical marijuana license does not exempt safety sensitive positions from federal regulations. Should one of these safety sensitive positions test positive on a drug test and lose the ability to perform within the job description outline, the City of Claremore will implement the zero tolerance policy resulting in immediate termination.

Essential Functions:

  • Operate gasoline powered hand tools
  • Use various hand tools such as concrete rakes, hammers, wrenches, screw drivers, shovels, etc
  • Performs layout and construction of various construction components including concrete formwork, concrete finishing, piping systems, grading, excavations and paving
  • Determines the locations of gas, telephone, power, television, water, and sewer lines from the sources prior to excavations
  • Insures the proper maintenance of equipment and tools by cleaning and checking tools and equipment after use. Maintains a variety of records relating to inspections, maintenance activity
  • Performs all required labor involved in new construction and maintenance projects as part of a crew, including pavement/ concrete cutting, ditch digging, as well as the laying/ backfilling of pipes
  • Operates trucks and construction or power equipment, such as dozers, scrapers, track loaders, excavators, mechanized broom, back-hoe, utility truck, tamper, dump truck, plate compactor, jetter/inductor truck, compressors, generators, trenchers, common hand and power tools, jackhammers, saws, and other small equipment used to construct new streets and drainage systems, as well as maintain or repair facilities already in place
  • Operates and maintains haul truck and low boy trailer moving equipment as well as operating end dump trailer
  • Performs routine inspection and preventive maintenance on assigned equipment and refers defects or needed repairs to construction manager; cleans equipment
  • Performs manual tasks, such as setting bases and forms to pour concrete
  • Signals workers engaged in pouring concrete when forms are filled to specified depths
  • Operates concrete saw to cut expansion and contraction joints in concrete; fills “cuts” with tar to allow concrete to breathe
  • Finishes surfaces of freshly poured concrete streets, walkways and curbs to specified grade and contour, using hand tools, such as floats, trowels and screeds
  • Performs all duties in conformance to appropriate safety and security standards
  • Coordinates traffic control at work sites
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Knowledge, Abilities and Skills:

  • Knowledge:Some knowledge of equipment, facilities, materials, methods and procedures used in maintenance, construction and repair activities;
  • Abilities:Come to work on time, follow directions, be honest and dependable, maintain safe work environment, be cooperative, have a positive attitude, be courteous and considerate team member, manage time effectively, concentrate on work, recognize problems and find solutions.Ability to perform heavy manual tasks for extended periods of time; work safely; communicate effectively verbally and in writing; establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other departments and the public; and to understand and carry out written and oral instructions
  • Skill:Skill in operation of some of the listed tools and equipment

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Valid Oklahoma State Drivers License Class “B” with air brake endorsement and the ability to obtain Class “A” CDL within 6 months
  • Graduation from high school or GED equivalent

Tools and Equipment:

Motorized vehicles and equipment, including dump truck, pickup truck, utility truck, tamper, plate compactor, saws, pumps, serial propane kettle, compressors, sanders, generators, common hand and power tools, shovels, wrenches, detection devices, mobile radio, phone, ditch witch.

Physical Demands:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls and reach with hands and arms. The employee frequently is required to stand and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to walk, sit, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, and smell.

The employee must lift and or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in outside weather conditions. The employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts and is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and vibration. The employee occasionally works in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
