Position Summary

The Community Medical Science Liaison (MSL) is a field-based clinician or healthcare professional (HCP) who focuses a majority of their time engaging (virtually or face-to-face) with external HCPs in community oncology settings. The Community MSL communicates peer-to-peer as a trusted partner with Oncologists/Hematologist Oncologists, Oncology Nurses, Nurse Practitioners, Physician Assistants, and Pharmacists. The Community MSL will engage as appropriate in peer-to-peer scientific and clinical exchange to share data and information in a fair and balanced way, and following approval, will support the safe and effective use of imetelstat. The Community MSL will be assigned responsibility of one of five geographic regions of the United States. The Community MSL will develop territory-specific interaction plans based on Medical Affairs objectives and HCP needs, as well as appropriately contribute to cross-functional account/institution plans. The Community MSL may be asked to participate in training for other field teams, provide appropriate clinical updates at region meetings, or participate in training of individual HCP speakers.

This position is remote and territory based; candidates must live in region (relocation is not provided). The Community Medical Science Liaison will report to the Executive Director, National Field Medical Teams.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Develops and maintains relationships with appropriate HCPs within a given territory using various channels for interactions (1:1, group presentation, virtual, etc.)
  • Effectively engages in scientific exchange with HCPs and responds to unsolicited questions while ensuring medical accuracy and compliance with local procedures, ethical and legal guidelines, and all Geron policies and directives
  • Actively assesses treatment patterns in their territory by meeting with HCPs to understand their needs and expertise
  • Completes all onboarding training by successfully meeting objectives set by the field medical trainer and peer mentor, and passes field certification by surpassing minimum standards
  • Continuously updates own knowledge of clinical practice guidelines and institutional or organizational pathways, unmet medical needs, clinical trials; understands the competitive landscape and actively prepares to address needs of their HCPs
  • Collects and appropriately shares meaningful insights to cross-functional partners to be assessed for use in updating strategic planning and territory plans
  • Engages as appropriate with local/regional chapters of professional societies and local/regional patient advocacy groups
  • Builds and maintains a territory plan aligned to Medical Affairs objectives, and actively contributes to cross-functional institution/account management planning to advance cross-functional understanding of customer needs
  • Provides clinical/scientific support as appropriate at local or regional meetings, which may include presenting clinical data, evaluating speakers, or meeting coverage
  • Maintains focus on prioritized Medical Affairs Field objectives while meeting all required Key Performance Indicators
  • Maintains effective and appropriate communication among internal stakeholders while maintaining full compliance with relevant requirements
  • Maintains timely, compliant, accurate reporting and documentation of all activities with HCPs

Experience And Competencies

  • Advanced degree (PA, NP, MSN, DNP, PharmD)
  • 5-7 years of experience in malignant hematology/oncology, and 3-5 years of relevant pharmaceutical/biotechnology industry experience; clinical experience highly preferred
  • A PhD with relevant hematology/oncology clinical experience may be considered
  • Demonstrated ability to identify, engage, and educate HCPs practicing in community oncology settings
  • Current knowledge of clinical and treatment landscape trends in malignant hematology and
  • Thorough understanding of FDA, OIG, HIPAA, PhRMA Code, and other relevant ethical guidelines
  • Must be a strong team player who can effectively work cross-functionally in a matrix environment, including appropriate collaboration with clinical and commercial partners
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office products and virtual engagement platform with expertise documenting interactions within a Customer Relationships Management (CRM) system
  • Able to translate scientific/clinical data into an understandable form to help HCPs best serve their patients
  • Effective communication and presentation skills
  • Energetically embraces responsibilities and demonstrates ability to achieve goals
  • Has strong initiative and learning agility
  • Exhibits excellent time management and ability to work independently
  • Strong people skills and ability to establish/maintain/grow professional relationships
  • Must be a proactive collaborator, flexible, and be able to work in a high growth, fast-paced environment
  • Valid driver’s license and satisfactory MVR record
  • Ability to meet credentialing requirements for access to healthcare institutions, medical facilities, and organizations that are in the assigned geography. These credentialing requirements may include, but are not limited to, background checks, drug screens, and proof of required immunization and/or vaccinations
  • Professional licensure, certifications, credentials must be active, in good standing, and maintained.
  • Travel within region up to 75%
  • Required travel to medical conferences, team meetings, and other group meetings (will require some weekends)

Salary Statement:

Offered compensation is determined based on market data, internal equity, and an applicant’s relevant skills, experience, and educational background. The salary ranges displayed below are only for those who, if selected for the role, will perform work in the specific locations listed. Please note the employment opportunity is not limited to these locations.

California Salary Range: $200,000 to $225,000

New York City Salary Range: $185,000 to $200,000

Washington Salary Range: $185,000 to $205,000
