Location: Remote/Virtual

Purpose: The Public Health Assistant in the Center for Child and Family Health (CCFH) will support the Michigan Child Death Review (CDR) Program and assist with evaluation activities for other projects supported by CCFH. Primary tasks include case record ascertainment, data entry, data verification, implementing data quality assurance protocols, and data collection. The Public Health Assistant contributes to the drafting of project reports and assists with administrative duties for assigned projects.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Evaluation Activities

  • Assist in the creation of qualitative and quantitative data collection protocols and instruments, including data collection and management processes, and monitoring and quality assurance procedures for a wide variety of study designs.
  • Assist in the development of evaluation plans and data analysis plans.
  • Participate in preparing project-related technical reports, briefs, manuscripts, presentations, training, and other written materials as indicated by the workplan.


Data Entry and Management Activities

  • Contact various external partners, including law enforcement agencies and medical examiner offices, to request records.
  • Enter case data into an online database in a timely, accurate manner. Follow data entry codebooks and data entry protocols. Enter data accurately and completely into web-based data collection system and Excel spreadsheets.
  • Complete data quality assurance processes.
  • Support data collection activities using a variety of data sources including law enforcement, medical examiner, and vital statistics records.
  • Assist Project Coordinator with creation and dissemination of project reports and presentations.


Data Entry Coordination and Quality Assurance Activities

  • Assist in tracking the status of data entry.
  • Assist in notifying team of outstanding data entry tasks.
  • Collaborate with CCFH data team, Project Coordinator, and child fatality review team to ensure data collection and entry goals are achieved.
  • Provide ongoing feedback to project coordinator around data entry best practices.
  • Verify data for accuracy and make recommendations to project team around data quality improvement.


Administrative/MPHI Responsibilities

  • Support the development and implementation of project work plans. Assist with preparation of IRB and privacy application materials, timelines, and reports, as needed.
  • Travel both in-state and out-of-state, as needed.
  • Remain up to date on MPHI-required internal trainings.
  • Remain current on literature in areas that are relevant to the program, current projects, and emergent areas of expertise and public health issues. Conduct literature reviews to inform grant proposals.
  • Attend conferences, meetings, and committees/workgroups, as needed.
  • Participate in ongoing strategic planning and other special projects for the Center and the organization.
  • Maintain a positive, strong, credible, professional interpersonal relationship with all parties of MPHI projects, and always represent the best interests of MPHI.

Qualifications/Requirements:

Education: A bachelor’s degree in a relevant field is required. A master’s degree is preferred.

Experience: A minimum of one to three years of related and progressively more responsible work experience in duties like those described above.

Important Skills and Characteristics:

  • Knowledge of/willingness to learn about applying health equity concepts to public health practice.
  • Strong attention to detail is essential.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills required. Strong writing, editing, and proofreading skills.
  • Intermediate capabilities with Microsoft Office applications (particularly Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook) and other types of cloud-based and collaboration applications (e.g., Zoom, Google Drive). B asic working skills in SPSS desired.
  • Knowledge of research and evaluation methods and techniques.
  • Basic experience in survey design, interview protocol creation, basic report and/or technical writing.
  • Knowledge of the principles of administrative support, including office procedures, email communication, meeting coordination, data entry, and document creation.
  • Knowledge of methods, procedures, precedents, and terminology used in research/evaluation.
  • Knowledge of assessing the use of public health informatics in developing, implementing, evaluating, and improving policies, programs, and services.
  • Professional work ethics, effective time management, and diverse collaboration skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team-based environment, including working with remote or virtual team members.


Work Environment and Physical Requirements: Some tasks may require travel. May require a valid vehicle operator’s license where needed to perform duties of this position. Standard office environment, with flexibility for remote work.
