Job Description

SUMMARY OF POSITION

The Community Engagement Director will be responsible for leading initiatives related to the Myrtle Beach area’s destination stewardship plan as well as monitor and manage evolving social inclusion practices. The primary work involves implementing the goals of the plan, leading initiatives, and projects to support the Grand Strand’s growth, accessibility, as well as economic and environmental sustainability. The individual will also work with the team to foster a greater sense of pride in the community and develop appreciation for tourism by improving resident education and engagement.

Primary Job Responsibilities & Functions

  • Oversee the implementation of the strategies outlined in the destination stewardship plan.
  • Collaborate with community partners and residents, industry stakeholders, strategic partners, and other related businesses to facilitate ongoing destination development in line with the destination stewardship plan.
  • Develop and lead programs and efforts to educate visitors and attract those interested in stewardship of the destination and contributing to community-building efforts.
  • Work closely with the Community Engagement Manager on KMBB initiatives and oversee minority owned business outreach efforts.
  • Develop and lead programs and efforts to increase accessibility at businesses, experiences, services, and beaches to enhance the reputation as one of the most welcoming, accessible, and inclusive places in the United States.
  • Advocate for sustainability initiatives that preserve the vitality and development for our resident and visitor needs now and into the future to protect water, beaches and our green spaces and parks.
  • Research, plan, and develop a comprehensive visitor education program.
  • Develop experiential engagement and training programs for residents and industry partners to increase knowledge and awareness of local tourism assets and experiences.
  • Work closely with the Community Engagement Manager on KMBB initiatives and oversee minority owned business outreach efforts.
  • Assist in the development, maintenance, and promotion of a central information hub and resource for visitors, businesses, and residents.
  • Serve as the subject matter expert in social inclusion and initiatives aligning with the You Belong at the Beach vision and values.
  • Work with Public Policy on ongoing legislation related to diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts both at the federal and state level.
  • Oversee and manage the efforts of the Community Engagement Council.
  • Any other duties as assigned by the President & CEO as needed as well as other responsibilities that align and meet the goals and objectives of our destination stewardship plan.

Critical Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities

  • Bachelor’s degree with an accredited college university in business administration, hospitality, marketing, communications or a related field and previous experience with a Destination Marketing Organization (DMO) or Convention & Visitors Bureau (CVB) or Chamber of Commerce (CoC) or relevant customer/visitor service management capacity.
  • An equivalent combination of education and/or experience with a minimum of 7 years’ experience in community focused or sales preferably in the nonprofit industry required.
  • 10+ years of leadership experience in organizational and strategy development.
  • Working knowledge of the community throughout the Grand Strand area.
  • Ability to develop and implement new projects independently based on strategic goals of a proven plan.
  • Advanced knowledge in Microsoft Office Suite, including but not limited to Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint.
  • Experience with online membership database system, Atlas preferred.
  • Proven understanding of strategic planning and implementation processes and creating learning and development opportunities for both internal and external audiences.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with internal and external partners and stakeholders to build consensus and execute programs that align with plan goals.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate effectively with cross functional teams.
  • Strong analytical, writing and oral communication skills.
  • Excellent project management skills with the ability to handle multiple initiatives simultaneously.
  • Dependability: employee can be depended on to complete work and services in a timely, accurate, and thorough manner and is conscientious about projects. Employee is available to work and collaborate with the team during normal working hours and outside of working hours, depending on the needs and projects to meet the goals and objectives of the destination stewardship plan.
  • Relationships with Others: Employee works effectively and relates well with others, including CVB and Chamber staff, colleagues, and individuals inside and outside the organization. Employee exhibits a positive and professional manner in dealing with others and works to maintain constructive working relationships.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIORNMENT

  • This job operates in a professional office environment. The role routinely uses standard office equipment and associated software including computers, phones, photocopies, and filing cabinets.
  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Occasionally required to stand, climb or balance, kneel, crouch or crawl and physically participate in outreach opportunities/activities in a varying outside climate conditions.
  • Frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
