COMMUNICATIONS DIRECTOR

Position Summary:

The O'Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center is one of 51 NCI-designated comprehensivecancer centers in the United States and is the only one in Alabama and in the Deep South region. A comprehensive designation also means UAB Medicine patients have access to leading-edge treatments or clinical trials that they may not otherwise have at local community hospitals or smaller cancer centers. For many, an NCI designation can hold the key to survival. On campus and around Birmingham, the O'Neal Cancer Center is a significant part of our economic powerhouse. The O'Neal Cancer Center powers more than 400 scientists and physician-scientists, cares for 20,000 patients annually, and is home to more than 160 employees, plus all the physicians and clinical staff engaged in cancer patient care.

Oversee a broad range of communication and media activities ensuring a consistent communications strategy for the O'Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center's internal and external audiences: o Strategically generate media interest o Manage media requests o Act as managing editor for O'Neal communicationso Ensure compliance and integration with UAB policies and procedures,o Securing media placements,o Track. evaluate, and report metrics of activitiesDevelop O'Neal messaging, ensuring all messages are consistent across the enterprise o Work collaboratively with our institutional partners at UAB Medicine and UAB University Relations o Represent the O'Neal on institutional communications committees o Act as liaison with internal communications and marketing unitsDisseminate information to target audiences through multiple communication platforms: e-newsletters, magazines, websites, media, social media, etc.Cultivate mutually beneficial relationships with key stakeholders, community leaders, faculty, and administrationProvide public relations guidance and topical instruction to a variety of audiences, including the director of the O'Neal, and client organizations(advertising firms, Cancer Care Network, governmental offices, O'Neal Advisory Board and Young Supporters Board)Create talking points, make presentations, serve as spokesperson, and represent the O'Neal at events inside and outside of UAB (press conferences, media briefings and national meetings)Effectively lead and supervise the O'Neal Communications staff.Capacity to handle multiple projects on deadline Must be engaging, diplomatic and handle confidential and sensitive information.

Salary Range: $60,835 - $98,855

Bachelor's degree in Business, Communications, Journalism or a related field and five (5) years of related experience required. Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirement.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in internal and external communications with experience in healthcare and/or higher education Solid research and analytical abilities, and capacity to handle multiple projects on deadline
  • Demonstrated familiarity with social media platforms and social media marketing.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and proficiency with communications technologies
  • Working knowledge of content management systems
  • Excellent verbal communication and presentation skills
  • Expertise in strategic counseling, writing, marketing, media and community relations, special event planning, and overall staff management, strong leadership track record.
  • Must be engaging, diplomatic and handle confidential and sensitive information
  • Ability to stand 3-4 hours and walk distances as required.
