Making Waves Education Foundation is a Bay Area nonprofit that supports Making Waves Academy – a public charter school with more than 1,100 5th through 12th grade students – and leads college and career programming with more than 430 college students.
Centering historically underrepresented and underserved students and their college and career journeys, Making Waves Education Foundation helps make college affordable and graduation attainable. We partner with students to meet their dreams with personalized support – including college and career coaching, scholarships, and college financial planning. Our alumni network includes more than 730 college graduates, who earn their degrees and land jobs at more than twice the rate of their peers, with 85% graduating from college debt-free.
ABOUT THE MAKING WAVES COLLEGE and CAREER INTERSHIP PROGRAM
Making Waves Education Foundation's college and career program provides need-based scholarship funding, one-to-one college and career coaching, and financial planning support for first-generation, low-income, students of color in the Bay Area.
Our internship program provides an opportunity for college students to gain:
Paid, hands-on work experience in a supportive and accessible (remote) work environment
Exploration and learnings across a range of administrative projects
Career development support and reflections with Making Waves career specialists
Exposure to other fields and networking opportunities across Making Waves
Interns are members of the Making Waves College and Career team interns will gain experience in the non-profit and education fields, working on a variety of projects related to Making Waves program growth and success. These roles are paid, part-time, remote roles for current college students in California. More information is below:
Pay: An hourly rate of $18-$21 based on experience. In line with our commitment to equity, fairness, and transparency, we have adopted a no salary negotiation policy. We understand the historical inequities created by salary negotiations and believe in offering a starting salary that is fair and grounded in evidence collected during a clear, competency-aligned hiring process.
Remote work: This role can be 100% remote based in California. A laptop will be provided as well as a monthly wi-fi reimbursement to successfully work remotely for the duration of the internship.
Internship credit: This can be used for internship credit depending on your interest and academic program requirements.

KEY EXPERIENCE, QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS
Required Qualifications:
You are a current college student, located in California
You are majoring in, are interested in, have experience or related skills in a related field (note: all majors welcome)
You have experience using Microsoft word, and email communications
You have experience or are open to working collaboratively with others
You have good attention to detail and double check your work
You are organized and are able to consistently meet deadlines and communicate updates related to projects
You are able to work a set schedule during the work week
Experience using Zoom or other video/telephone software programs, working or completing coursework remotely
COLLEGE AND CAREER PROGRAM INTERNSHIPS JOB DESCRIPTIONS
PEER SUCCESS INTERN
This internship is perfect for students in good academic standing who have strong interpersonal and communication skills, along with a genuine willingness to learn and help others. Reporting to the Vice President of Student Success, this role calls for qualities such as empathy, active listening, problem-solving abilities, and a motivational attitude. Eligible candidates must be enrolled at San Francisco State University, Cal State East Bay, or Sacramento State University. Join us to be part of a dedicated team committed to fostering student success and making a meaningful impact on the academic community. Interns in this position will work approximately 8 hours a month starting in August 2024 and ending in December 2024
Responsibilities include:
Plan, schedule and facilitate monthly peer group meetings
Provide perspective and guidance on college life and act as a facilitator, guiding Wave-Makers to appropriate campus resources and helping them understand the commitment necessary to succeed
Offer peer support, modeling effective strategies for learning, and serving as an accountability partner to members of the Making Waves College and Career Program
Using a growth mindset; facilitate student learning skill development and goal setting group sessions
Serve as a role model, helping students in Making Waves address challenges and assess progress to goals
Support students with course planning
Foster a safe, supportive and welcoming environment, maintaining confidentiality
Participate in trainings and follow-up meetings as assigned
Maintain accurate records of interactions, progress, and outcomes to evaluate the effectiveness of support services and inform program improvements
UX RESEARCH INTERN
This internship is ideal for a motivated and detail-oriented individual with a passion for user experience research. The User Experience (UX) Research Intern will play a pivotal role in shaping innovative products such as our AI copilot for education and employment coaching, and our digital payments system for college scholarships. In this role, you'll gather and analyze user insights through various research methods and collaborate with cross-functional teams, reporting directly to the VP of Product Innovation. You'll also engage in special projects that align with your interests. This internship offers a unique opportunity to make a meaningful impact while enhancing your skills in UX research, data analysis, and product development. Interns in this position will work approximately 6 hours a week starting in September 2024 and ending in January 2024.
Responsibilities include:
Gather insights about users through various research methods, including designing and analyzing surveys, conducting user interviews and diary studies, facilitating usability studies, and performing ethnographic research
Identify opportunities where research can inspire, enhance, or evaluate products
Analyze qualitative and quantitative results and convey those insights to the appropriate people in the most engaging and actionable manner
Work collaboratively with cross-functional teams to integrate research findings into product development
Engage in special projects that align with your interests and aspirations, which may include software engineering, data analysis, content development, or community outreach
Attend meetings and provide input on product concepts and strategic projects
Contribute to the creation of reports and strategic documents
Assist with process improvements and create resources to enhance efficiency and effectiveness
CAREER AND ALUMNI SERVICES INTERN
This internship is ideal for a proactive and organized individual with strong communication skills and a passion for career development. The Career and Alumni Services Intern will play a vital role in supporting the planning and execution of career development initiatives, research, communication, event coordination, and administrative tasks. Reporting to the Sr. Manager of Early Career and Alumni, this position will work closely with the Early Career & Alumni team to enhance student and alumni engagement and career services at Making Waves. Interns in this position will work approximately 6 hours a week starting in September 2024 and ending in December 2024.
Responsibilities include:
Assist in designing and implementing career development programs and events in partnership with the Career Development Manager and Sr. Manager of Early Career & Alumni Services
Support with creation of resources
Conduct research on industry trends and best practices for career services and alumni engagement
Perform various administrative tasks, including updating our program job board and LinkedIn networking page
Help manage communications with current students and alumni through newsletters, social media, and email campaigns
Update and maintain accurate records in our alumni and student databases
Capstone: Identify an area that MWEF could improve with engagement with WM and Alums and present ideas and suggestions on how we can improve
DATA & OPERATIONS INTERN
This internship is ideal for students who have a high level of attention to detail and are interested in database management, data analysis, and non-profit administrative operations. This position will report to the Senior Manager, Data Strategy & Operations. Projects in this internship are flexible and will be based on the selected individual's skill set. Internship starts September 2024 and ends December 2024.
Responsibilities may include:
Identifying and correcting data anomalies within our Salesforce database
Preparation of annual and/or quarterly reports
Collaborate with Data Specialist & Senior Manager, Data Strategy & Operations to write Python scripts to analyze and process degree data
Creation of surveys using Get Feedback
Research on and compilation of topics for our student newsletter
Collaborate with the Operations Coordinator in the creation or editing of marketing collateral
