Specific Duties And Responsibilities

This Correctional Officer Captain vacancy is within FDC’s Office of Intelligence Canine Interdiction Unit. The individual selected for this position will maintain a detection canine for the Department on a full-time basis and be expected to conduct searches on and off Department property, staff, visitors, inmates, and physical locations. The incumbent will be expected to organize and execute canine operations, as well as develop intelligence and coordinate interdiction operations designed to prevent the introduction of contraband into FDC facilities.

Duties Include But Are Not Limited To The Following

Development of strategic and tactical intelligence.

Conduct physical searches of inmates, visitors, Departmental staff and property consistent with Florida law, administrative rule, and FDC procedures.

Demonstrate the ability to collect evidence, establish and maintain a chain of custody, and dispose of evidence in accordance with law enforcement practices and FDC procedures.

Maintenance of their assigned canine to include housing, cleaning, and maintaining overall health of the animal.

Maintain training requirements of their assigned canine.

Maintain canine training records to include the documentation of the necessary threshold of odor recognition and hours spent training their canine.

Conduct canine screenings of inmate housing areas, staff and visitor vehicles, facility buildings and inmate work areas for the odor of narcotics.

Participate in operational planning for daily operations as well as any special operations.

Ability to work flexible hours and days.

Conduct interviews with inmates, staff, and visitors to identify routes of contraband introduction into our secure facilities.

Conduct mobile and stationary surveillance when required.

Develop and maintain working relationships with institutional staff and utilize information provided to assist with investigations and canine operations.

Communicate findings and gathered intelligence to supervisors to be used in the formulation of operational planning or case investigations.

Conducts and documents interviews with inmates suspected to be members of a Security Threat Group.

Provide routine assistance to the Canine Interdiction Officers during staff/visitor screenings and other special operations.

Assume a lead role and assist in weekly trainings with the Canine Interdiction Officers

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSA’s)

Effectively communicate both orally and in writing.

Knowledge of correctional principles and procedures.

Knowledge of handling a narcotics’ K9.

Knowledge of proper care and handling of a narcotics’ K9.

Demonstrated proficiency in routine training and documentation of a narcotics’ K9.

Knowledge of riot and crowd control procedures.

Knowledge of investigative procedures and techniques.

Knowledge of report writing techniques.

Skilled in using surveillance equipment, restraining devices and firearms.

Ability to collect, analyze and interpret evidence.

Ability to review and evaluate reports.

Ability to effectively interview a variety of individuals including complainants, witnesses and suspects.

Ability to prepare written reports and to describe facts and events accurately.

Ability to understand and apply laws, rules, regulations, policies and procedures.

Ability to plan, organize and coordinate work assignments.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.

Ability to provide care and proper attention to a working canine.

Possess the ability to plan and lead weekly trainings with K9 officers within the region.

Minimum Qualifications

A High School Diploma or equivalent.

A valid Florida Driver’s License.

Current valid certification by the Florida Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission as a Correctional Officer pursuant to Ch. 943. F.S.

Minimum 3 Years Of Experience As a Correctional Officer.
