The California Department of Justice is hiring an attorney in our Division of Medi-Cal Fraud and Elder Abuse (DMFEA), Civil Section located in Sacramento. Applicants must live within a commutable distance from the office.


Schedule: 1 day/ in-office; 4 days/telework


Job Description:

A Deputy Attorney General (DAG) in DMFEA performs complex legal work investigating and litigating cases of violations of the state False Claims Act (FCA), as well as other cases involving Medi-Cal fraud (i.e., fraud by providers and other entities at the expense of Medi-Cal, California's Medicaid program).


The duties of this DMFEA DAG position include:

  • Developing strategic case plans;
  • Managing and developing investigations; handling discovery professionally and effectively;
  • Identifying and evaluating witnesses;
  • Performing challenging legal research in the areas of health care fraud and False Claims Act law, and communicating results thereof with effective writing and oral skills; and,
  • Coordinating efforts with other states' Attorney Generals' offices and U.S. Attorney's Offices in joint investigations and actions.


The DAG also coordinates work with DMFEA paralegals and DMFEA Investigative Auditors at all stages of investigations and litigation. The DAG effectively manages document-intensive cases. Experience in and/or knowledge of health care fraud, the health care industry, the Medi-Cal Program, FCA litigation (state or federal), and the pharmaceutical industry is helpful but not required. A successful applicant would be assigned their own caseload but would be a member of a small team of attorneys, paralegals and secretaries and would interact with their team regularly.


Desirable Qualifications Include:

  • Complex civil plaintiff or defense trial experience is helpful but not required;
  • Demonstrated ability and experience in developing case plans, managing caseloads, and coordinating investigative activities, including civil case preparation and witness management.
  • Experience in health care law, false claims act (federal or state) experience, knowledge of the health care industry and the Medi-Cal program would be helpful.


Minimum Qualifications

Must be an active member of the California State Bar.


Salary Ranges (Monthly)

DAG III (5+ years of legal experience) $10,536.00 - $13,526.00

DAG IV (6+ years of legal experience) $11,644.00 - $14,954.00
