New Justice Project MN is a Black led organizing hub focused on building power for and with low income and no income Black Minnesotans by organizing in the policy areas of jobs, housing and supporting the ongoing work of reimagining community safety. About The Position

New Justice Project (NJP) is seeking a Chief of Staff to support effective organizational management, sustainability, and growth. As the Chief of Staff, you will be the deeply trusted right-hand person to the founder/executive director, Rod Adams, maximizing the best collaborative use of his and your capacities. You thrive managing multiple responsibilities and can anticipate and proactively handle complex, nuanced situations. You have authentic interpersonal skills, understand and appropriately manage the difference between urgent and important matters, easily engage diverse groups, and achieve actionable results.

Primary Responsibilities

Strategic Planning, Alignment & Executive Support

  • Serve as a key thought partner and advisor to the founder/executive director, acting as a sounding board for ideas and identifying solutions to challenges
  • Help founder/executive director identify priorities, and strategically align his time and focus with those priorities
  • In partnership with the founder/executive director, develop and lead the execution of the organization’s strategic plan
  • Help identify and drive the organization toward goals and key performance indicators
  • Lead strategic and organizational projects
  • Keep founder/executive director aware of and on top of upcoming appointments and key “to-dos” that require his attention and follow-up
  • Plan weekly team meetings and leadership team retreats, developing objectives and agenda, coordinating logistics
  • Develop and maintain organizational systems to streamline operations and increase team effectiveness
  • Help to create and maintain a healthy organizational culture

Organizational Administration & Communications

  • Provide founder/executive director communications support: drafting emails, reports, memos, pitch decks, presentations, internal and external communications, as needed
  • Represent the founder/executive director and NJP at conferences, convenings, and/or partner meetings when needed
  • Assist with preparing and printing materials for meetings and presentations
  • Support Organizing Team with events logistics and coordination (incl. sourcing vendors; collecting vendor and member payment documentation; food and beverage orders; materials and supply orders; on-site support, etc.)
  • Manage expense bi-weekly reimbursement process
  • Manage Google Drive files and databases as needed
  • Manage and respond to inquiries sent to the org’s general email inbox(es)

Hiring and Management

  • Manage hiring process and draft materials when needed
  • Train and manage new staff
  • Manage other team members as identified

Desired Qualifications

  • 6 - 8 years of professional experience with at least a bachelor’s degree, advanced degree preferred (MBA, MA/MS, MPA/MPP)
  • Experience in wide-ranging or cross-functional areas, with a self-starter attitude to learn new skills
  • Strategic and analytical thinker and problem solver
  • Great listener and communicator (verbal and written) who can translate information appropriately
  • Excellent relationship and network-builder; influences others to achieve outcomes
  • Systems thinker, with ability to create and implement processes
  • Excellent organization, time management, follow-up, and follow through skills
  • Maintains confidentiality, discernment, and good judgment when working with sensitive information and the personal realities of our staff and community members
  • Knowledge of financial management and strategic planning a plush
  • Knowledge of human resource policies a plus
  • Nonprofit org administration and management skills a plus (to help the org operated more effectively)
  • Efficiency with Google Suite preferred
  • Ability to work some nights and weekends, as needed for NJP community events
  • Commitment to understand race, class, gender, and other equity issues as part of your work
  • Authentic interest in social justice and civic participation a must

Physical Demands and Working Environment

Work is performed in a standard office environment which requires occasionally lifting such articles as file boxes or heavier materials up to 25lbs with help from others and/or lifting and carrying light objects frequently. A job in this category may require walking or standing to a significant degree or may involve sitting most of the time with long periods of computer work and heavy phone usage.

  • Full health and dental benefits through HealthPartners. New Justice Project pays 95% of monthly
  • insurance premiums for the employee and their family.
  • Long Term Disability, AD&D and life insurance provided at no cost to employee.
  • 401(k) and Roth 401(K) Retirement plans with up to 3% employer match.
  • Full-time Leave Policy = 3 weeks of vacation in the first year, 2 weeks of sick and safe leave upon hire with another 2 weeks in the first year, 8 paid holidays, and an office closure the last week of the year.
  • 12 weeks paid parental leave, as well as other health related extended paid leave options.
  • Annual 4% guaranteed pay increase; Monthly reimbursements including cell phone and home internet

Reports to & Location

  • This position reports directly to the Founder/Executive Director
  • This position is hybrid, with remote and on-site hours (Minneapolis-Saint Paul Metro Area). May be required to occasionally travel.
