Chief Medical Officer

About The Position

This is a part-time role estimated to require around 5-20 hours per week depending on skills, experience, and expertise of qualified candidates.

Position Description

The CMO serves as an expert medical and clinical resource to other UNOS staff, UNOS and OPTN members, the government, and the general public in the performance of OPTN contract requirements and other UNOS corporate initiatives.Provides advice with respect to the medical and clinical aspects of OPTN operations, including participation in OPTN policy development, policy compliance, patient safety-related incident handling, development of transplant clinical quality improvement initiatives, professional and lay education, and research conducted by the UNOS staff.Assists UNOS staff with the development of research proposals and projects, grant proposals, and research publications.The CMO will work closely with the UNOS’ senior management group and will provide medical and clinical perspectives in organizational planning and oversight of OPTN contract related activities as well as UNOS corporate initiatives. The individual must be recognized by the professional transplant community as a knowledgeable expert in the medical and clinical practice of organ transplantation. As such, the CMO may be called upon from time to time to represent UNOS in public and before the media and elected officials and their staff.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide medical and clinical guidance to UNOS in response to serious or time-sensitive patient safety and public health-related incidents reported to the OPTN.Such response includes rapid screening and assessment of events reported to the OPTN involving threat to patient safety or public health.These reports include potential donor-derived disease transmission events, as well as adverse events impacting transplant patients and living donor patients.
  • Provide medical and clinical guidance to UNOS regarding the development of transplant quality and patient safety initiatives.In addition, provide medical and clinical guidance to staff in all UNOS departments as needed for various operational purposes, including fulfillment of certain OPTN contract deliverables as well as UNOS corporate (i.e., non-OPTN) contracts and initiatives.Provide medical and clinical expertise to staff in all UNOS departments as they conduct activities and develop documents or other communications that include clinical topics.
  • Provide medical and clinical guidance in analytical research and education conducted by UNOS staff.Provide medical and clinical expertise in the development of research projects, responses to requests for data/analysis, funding proposals, and research publications.
  • Initiate ideas for growth of UNOS corporate (i.e., non-OPTN) business aligned with the mission of UNOS.
  • Assist the CEO, COO, and senior management team with public speaking responsibilities around the country, e.g., invited talks at meetings/conferences of professional organizations and societies.Act as media spokesperson regarding clinical matters.


Minimum Requirements

This position requires a recognized scientist/physician with 15 years of proven expertise in clinical transplantation, quality and patient safety improvement systems, biomedical research, or other related experience.

Critical Skills

  • Demonstrated ability to provide strong leadership and work successfully with individuals of diverse professional backgrounds.
  • Public speaking experience required.
  • The individual must be able to successfully engage with UNOS staff at all levels as a member of a team, members of the professional transplant community, public health stakeholders, and federal officials.


Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience in management or administration and procurement of external funding is desired.


Education

M.D. required with extensive knowledge of transplantation medicine and surgery, as well as deceased and living organ donor issues.
