Chief Financial Officer

Supervisor: President & CEO

Pay Type: Salary, Exempt, Full-Time

Position Summary: Executive level leadership providing strategic financial expertise to the President and CEO as well as financial acuity and relationships with board and committee members. Excels as an expert in financial planning, forecasting, investment strategies, and knowledge on all applicable policies and regulations. Skillful understanding of the organization’s mission and how this affects all areas financially.

Essential Functions

  • Financial Management
    • Oversee and direct the work of all accounting and financial information.
    • Monitor and manage the organization’s cash and investments through accurate cash flow analysis and projections ensuring compliance with investment policy.
    • Financial contact and liaison with the Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Foundation.
    • Ensure accurate financial presentation on all correspondence with board and committee members.
    • Manage the budget process through preparation, review, and consolidation of annual budgets as well as forecasting multi-year budgets.
    • Ensure internal controls adhere to compliance with accounting regulations as well as all applicable regulatory laws for financial and tax reporting.
  • Strategic Leadership:
    • Organize, lead, and direct the operations of both the accounting and human resource teams.
    • Contribute to the development of the organization’s ongoing strategic goals and objectives.
    • Develop, enhance, and implement enforcement of all policies and procedures for the organization through systems that will improve operations through efficiencies while maintaining opportunities for growth.
  • Lead in all insurance needs of the organization.
  • Responsible for the oversight and compliance of all retirement plans.
  • Leadership in relationships with all vendors related to financial, human resource, and organizational assets.
  • Any other duties as assigned by the President and CEO.

Education and / or Qualifications preferred:

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or business administration; Master’s degree or professional accounting designation (such as CPA) is highly preferred.
  • Experience: Significant knowledge in nonprofits. Experienced leader in budget management and cash and investment strategies. Leadership skills that can manage at all levels of the organization.
  • Skills/Knowledge/Licenses: High level of integrity and accountability. Ability to lead in a complex environment that encourages results.

Working Conditions: Basic mobility is expected in offices, grounds, and exhibition areas. Ability to observe details at close range and communicate information accurately with others. Engage in occasional object manipulation with or without assistance, and efficiently navigate the workspace to access essential resources. Manage occasional lifting tasks, and ability to handle objects weighing up to 20 pounds with ease and regularity. This job operates in a professional indoor office environment, across grounds, and exhibition areas. Occasionally, may be required to work outdoors under inclement weather conditions. Occasional assignment to off-shift or weekend duties.
