The Department of Exceptional Education is seeking qualified master’s level Speech-Lead Teacher for Special Education. Caseloads include preschool –school age students. Applicants should be knowledgeable about communication disorders related to a variety of disabilities. Expertise in assessment and intervention planning is required as well as the ability to work collaboratively with teachers, parents, and other professionals. CF-SPELL OUT Mentorship/Supervision is available.

Title: Speech-Lead Teacher for Special Education

Under general supervision, administers tests and evaluates speech and language skills of students; creates lesson plans and activities for students; provides speech and language therapy; collects data and monitors students’ progress; facilitates meetings to review students’ progress and/or recommend speech and language services.

Essential Functions

The following duties are representative of this position. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.

  • Provides speech and language therapy to students based on Individualized Education Programs (IEPs).
  • Evaluates students using appropriate diagnostic instruments; and interpret test results.
  • Assesses (using district approved data collection tools/methods) and monitors student progress on at least a weekly basis and makes programming decisions based on the data collected; updates IEPs with progress on IEP goals in alignment with district-issued progress reports and report cards.
  • Develops eligibility and evaluation reports following written departmental procedures and practices.
  • Follows written departmental procedures and practices for developing and implementing compliant Develops Individualized Education Programs Plans (IEP) according to in alignment with local, state, and federal guidelines.
  • Schedules and prepares relevant paperwork following written departmental procedures and practices and conducts compliant IEP meetings in line with department mandated timelines; conveys results and recommendations for educational programming to parents/guardians.
  • Confers with parents and teachers; reviews student folders, previous evaluations, and related documents to develop and implement appropriate educational plans for students and facilitate carryover of learned skills.
  • Consults and collaborates with parents, teachers, administrators, and other professionals regarding students’ educational programming; ensures relevant staff members have access to pertinent sections of an IEP.
  • Participates in departmental meetings and professional learning activities.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master’s degree from an American Speech, Language and Hearing Association (ASHA) approved accredited college or university in speech-language pathology required.
  • Valid Georgia Professional Standards Commission approved certificate in speech and language pathology at level S-5 or above or a valid license for speech-language pathologist required.
