What You’ll Do / A Day in the Life Typically Includes

As an employee of the world’s largest book and entertainment distributor, you could be at the forefront of turning a book into bestseller, supplying the world’s leading libraries and educational institutions, making a movie release an instant classic, a new music artist an overnight sensation or everyone’s “must have.”

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

(The following statements describe the general nature of work being performed in this job. They are not intended to be an exhaustive list of all duties. Additional responsibilities may be assigned by management):

  • Create original and adaptive LC cataloging records online for books, e-book, video, and audio products, using Unabridged Dewey and Library of Congress classification and Library of Congress subject headings according to AACR2 rules and in MARC format.
  • Create Enhanced MARC cataloging records online using Abridged Dewey classification, Sears subject headings, and MARC format.
  • Format and utilize publisher and/or LC supplied information to generate pre-publication cataloging records according to national standards and B&T conventions to support review source and special list cataloging activities, as needed.
  • Examine item-in-hand or pre-publication material and write brief objective summaries (annotations)
  • Update pre-publication records with item-in-hand as needed; correct errors.

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is expected to regularly sit, use hands and fingers, and lift/move up to 10 pounds. Specific vision requirements include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and the ability to adjust focus.

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Library Science (MLS) from an ALA accredited school
  • 1-2 years practical cataloging experience in a library or business environment, or recent MLS graduate with cataloging coursework
  • Basic PC skills; knowledge on online and automated library systems
  • Ability to read analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or government regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals and effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, and the general public
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists and interpret instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form
