Caribbean Cultural Advisor

Overview

Under the direction of the Executive Director for Cultural Affairs, the Caribbean Cultural Advisor will play a pivotal role in fostering a sense of belonging among residents, building coalitions, informing culturally responsive program development, and proactively engaging community members to share services and resources. As a Cultural Advisor, you will be at the forefront of driving inclusivity, cultural understanding, and collaboration within our organization.

Responsibilities

General Responsibilities:

  • Represent the Mayor in public settings and communicate the Mayor’s stance on critical issues in the community.
  • Attend regular meetings hosted by community organizations.
  • Support the Mayor’s Office Scheduling and Advance team to ensure appropriate staffing, event promotion, and briefing.
  • Connect constituents/cultural communities with state partners and community stakeholder organizations.
  • Support The Mayor’s Office in executing programming and initiatives on the neighborhood level.
  • May advise the policy team on issues related to city-wide cultural matters.
  • Perform related work as required.

Fostering a Sense Of Belonging And Building Coalitions

  • Create and cultivate a welcoming and inclusive environment for all residents, ensuring they feel valued and connected within the community.
  • Collaborate with local organizations, community leaders, and stakeholders to establish partnerships and coalitions that promote unity and collective action.
  • Organize and participate in events, workshops, and dialogues aimed at strengthening community bonds and fostering a shared sense of identity.

Informing Culturally Responsive Program Development

  • Conduct research and assessments to understand the diverse cultural needs, preferences, and challenges of the community.
  • Provide valuable insights and recommendations to guide the design and implementation of programs, policies, and practices that respect and reflect the cultural diversity within the community.
  • Collaborate with internal teams to infuse cultural competence into the development of city programs, ensuring they are accessible and inclusive to all residents.

Proactively Engaging Residents Through Culturally Competent Approaches

  • Initiate outreach efforts that are culturally sensitive and tailored to diverse community groups, encouraging their active participation in community initiatives.
  • Develop communication strategies that resonate with different cultural backgrounds, ensuring effective dissemination of information about available services, resources, and opportunities.
  • Provide cultural competency training and guidance to fellow employees, promoting a deeper understanding of diverse perspectives and needs.

Minimum Entrance Qualifications

  • Three (3) years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, experience in office management, office administration, business administration, or public administration (1 year may be substituted with an Associate’s degree one (1) or two (2) years may be substituted with a Bachelor’s degree) .
  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Customer service skills and interpersonal and organizational skills preferred.
  • Ability to work well and establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and other departmental staff. Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Must appreciate and respect the confidentiality of all situations.
  • Must be able to work independently, follow through, and interpret complex oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and focus on detail as required by the position.
  • Candidates must be comfortable in a fast-paced environment and be able to manage multiple projects on a tight deadline.
  • Flexibility - Ability to work occasional evenings or weekends.
  • Bilingual preferred (Spanish, Haitian Creole, Cape Verdean Creole, Chinese, and Vietnamese).
