The Orange County Building Safety division is currently seeking well qualified candidates to fulfill multiple roles of "Building Inspector I or II".

This position inspects construction for compliance with adopted building codes, plans and specifications. Inspects footings, slabs, beams, columns, roofing, concrete work, Florida accessibility code, fireproofing, exits for life safety, and rated assemblies for compliance with pertinent county code and state statutes. Inspects for unpermitted construction, and conducts use permit inspections for certificate of occupancy. Inspects sidewalks, energy efficiency issues, and lot drainage.

Job Description

This position may be required to assist with emergency support functions in the event of a declared emergency and/or any other emergency duties as assigned.

Representative Duties/Assignments

  • Conducts inspections and tests in the assigned specialty area to enforce compliance with the County adopted codes, and applicable laws, rules and regulations.
  • Work is performed with considerable independence under the general direction of the assigned supervisor. Performance is reviewed through observations, conferences, reports and results achieved.
  • Conducts inspections for compliance with adopted codes, ordinances and state statutes.
  • Reads and interprets construction plans and blueprints. Informs public of building code changes and explains code to contractors, architects, engineers and homeowners.
  • Maintains accurate records of inspection activities and violations.
  • Utilizes Building Division mobile data computer system.


Minimum Qualifications

Building Inspector I

High school graduate or equivalent and four (4) years of experience in the construction industry. An Associate's or Bachelor's degree in a related field may substitute for up to three (3) years of experience with a minimum of one (1) year of construction experience.

Note: Experience must be verified, in the form of an affidavit, by a licensed contractor, fire marshal, architect, engineer, or building official during first week of employment.

Must possess and maintain a valid State of Florida Driver's License.

Mandatory Requirement

Must qualify for provisional inspector licensure pursuant to Florida Statute Chapter 468, Part XII for applicable discipline(s): Building, Mechanical, Electrical and/or Plumbing. Employee must obtain provisional inspector license within 120 days from date of hire and a standard inspector license within two (2) years from the date of receiving a provisional inspector license and maintain said license throughout employment.

Note: Employees that are unable to obtain the required license(s) within the established timeframe will be required to forfeit their position as an Orange County Inspector.

Must be able to effectively communicate with customers and staff, verbally and in writing.

Building Inspector II

High school graduate or equivalent and five (5) years of experience in the construction industry. An Associate's or Bachelor's degree in a related field may substitute for up to four (4) years of experience with a minimum of one (1) year of construction experience.

Note: Experience must be verified, in the form of an affidavit, by a licensed contractor, fire marshal, architect, engineer, or building official during first week of employment.

Must possess State of Florida Standard Inspector license pursuant to Florida Statute Chapter 468, Part XII for applicable discipline(s): Building, Mechanical, Electrical and/or Plumbing.

Must possess and maintain a valid State of Florida Driver's License.

Salary Information

Pay Grade: 014 -- $ 26.06

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Building Inspector II

Pay Grade: 018 -- From $ 29.50 to $47.21

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
