Definition

Under close supervision of the Aquatic & Fitness Center Manager, maintains the cleanliness of facilities and prepares facilities for recreation and leisure programs.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

Checks for cleanliness and cleans rooms, offices, gymnasiums, bathrooms, and restrooms, locker rooms, pool area, elevator, racquetball court, and sauna; checks restrooms and ensures proper lighting by replacing light bulbs, checks for working air conditioning and leaking faucets and reports problems to supervisor; empties trash, fills paper towel holders, toilet tissue, and soap containers; dusts, cleans, and polishes furniture, fixtures, woodwork, and equipment; washes and cleans windows, sweeps, washes, strips, waxes, and polishes floors, and sweeps and vacuums rugs; removes spots from carpets; distributes paper and janitorial supplies. Maintains list of needed supplies and notifies supervisor when stocks are low; moves objects weighing up to 50 pounds; mops or scrapes sticky or heavy liquids from floors; dry mops racquetball court; sweeps front steps, picks up trash outside of building; performs other related duties as required.

Requirements

Knowledge of: Procedures, materials, and tools used in washing, waxing, vacuuming, and polishing wood, tile, cement, linoleum, glass, and other woodwork, furniture, and fixtures; use of and minor adjustment to sweepers, vacuum cleaners, floor waxers, polishers, and other equipment; how to make minor repairs to heating, electrical, plumbing, and other systems.

Ability to: Handle cleaning problems, lift and move moderately heavy objects, organize cleaning work and develop work methods; understand, remember and carry out oral and written directions and learn quickly from directions and demonstrations; maintain a building, office unit or area in a clean, hygienic and orderly condition; follow safety precautions and report potentially hazardous conditions; work harmoniously with others; keep simple records; read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position.

Special Requirements

License: Appointee will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.

Tools And Equipment Used

Hand tools, pliers, hammers, screwdrivers and drills; buffers; vacuums; wet/dry vacuum; wet/dry carpet extractors; mops; brooms; dust pans; scrapers; power washers; squeegees; brooms; floor dryer; shovels; cleaning supplies.

Physical Demands

Position requires employee to: Continuously use hands and fingers to operate equipment, reach with hands and arms to pick up trash, vacuum, clean mirrors, and carry buckets of water and disinfectant to clean drains; Frequently walk inside the building and also walk around the outside grounds for part of shift, talk and hear, stoop to pick up trash, kneel and crawl to clean baseboards and wax floors, crouch to pick up trash, vacuum underneath fixtures, and sweep with a broom, push and pull a vacuum cleaner , carry a full bucket weighing 11 - 25 lbs. from 15 to 75 feet , carry a large full trash bag from 20 to 100 feet; Occasionally climb 2 flights of stairs while carrying trash bags, up to a total 50 times per shift, climb and balance on 6 foot and 10 foot ladders while carrying light bulbs, tools and disinfectant, stand on carpet, hardwood floors, and concrete, lift and carry up to 10 lbs. of trash bags, wet mop, broom, hand tools, cleaning supplies, disinfectants, buckets, and up to 60 individual chairs in succession , flip over, carry, and set up 8 foot tables weighing up to 25 lbs. each, lift and carry 26 to 50 lbs. of cartons of paper towels, toilet tissue, and liquid soap. Infrequently sit on a stool while relieving the front desk and lift and move weights in weight room from 5 to 100 feet

Special Vision requirements: Close, distance, and the ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment

Position requires employee to: Continuously work in an indoor environment; Frequently work in wet humid conditions in restroom, pool area, and sauna be exposed to fumes or airborne particles such as dust be exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals including bleach and disinfectants; Occasionally work in outdoor weather conditions such as sun, heat, humidity, and rain, work with vibration from the vacuum and floor buffer.
