About The Opportunity

Job Summary:

This position ensures that the Biology laboratory course and research activities are able to operate smoothly. This position is responsible for preparing materials for Biology laboratory courses. This position also may be called upon to teach laboratory courses in Biology. The position also performs upkeep and maintenance of laboratory equipment and places laboratory supply orders for both courses and research. Serves as primary point of contact for lab users (PIs, lab instructors, and students), and provides thorough problem resolution for lab equipment issues. Accountable for training researchers and research staff on lab equipment, including student training. Assures regulatory compliance of laboratories with units such as OSHA, DEA, DOT, and DLAM and acts as the departmental safety officer.

Minimum Qualifications

Familiarity with research equipment used in laboratories, including microscopes, spectrophotometer, autoclaves, etc. Excellent communication skills and strong skills in training and assisting student's research. Knowledge and skills normally acquired through completion of a Master's Degree in scientific field, with five plus years of experience in lab management.

Key Responsibilities

  • Materials Preparation for Laboratory Courses
  • Prepare reagents and equipment for Biology laboratory courses, and organize those in the laboratory classroom space.
  • Remove and break down materials after lab is completed.
  • Maintain an organized and functional preparation lab
  • Collaborate with other laboratory instructors to develop protocols.
  • Materials Procurement and Equipment Maintenance:
  • Supervise maintenance of laboratories, including planning, ordering equipment and supplies.
  • Place and receive orders and maintain purchase records, including corporate credit reconciliation.
  • Review and evaluate contracts with suppliers and liaison with sales representatives to ensure best pricing.
  • Oversee equipment maintenance, arrange for necessary minor repairs and work with Department Chair on more extensive repairs and/or space issues.
  • Teach Laboratory Courses
  • Teach laboratory courses in General Biology and potentially other laboratory courses in areas of expertise.
  • Problem Resolution:
  • Provide problem resolution to faculty, research staff and students related to the operation of the laboratories.
  • Serve as liaison between vendors, internal departments, faculty, and lab staff, ensuring problems are resolved in a timely manner.
  • Take ownership of issues and bring them to resolution.
  • Train Students:
  • Train student researchers on proper use of instruments and procedures.
  • Provide oversight on proper usage and compliance.
  • Coordinate safety training of all faculty, staff, graduate students and work-study students, and research methods to reduce waste and minimize potential for accidents.
  • Regulatory Compliance
  • Assure that shipments meet DOT and other regulations and supervise hazardous waste handling and removal.
  • Respond to accidents and spills and to requests from the institutional Animal Care and Radiation Safety Committees.
  • Prepare, revise and review teaching lab protocols to ensure compliance with human subject and animal care regulations as appropriate.
