Join the 711th Human Performance Wing within the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) and be at the forefront of biotechnological innovation, where your experience will be instrumental in research that optimizes the health and performance of our Air Force and Space Force warfighters. We are seeking a highly skilled and innovative researcher to lead the discovery of novel Science and Technology (S&T) solutions to address operational challenges faced by the Air Force (AF) and the Department of Defense (DoD). The ideal candidate will be a key member of the bioinformatics core team, design and execute functional "omics" analysis pipelines, and integrate cutting-edge bioinformatics and metagenomic tools for real-time detection of human performance pathways.

Position Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Leadership and Mentorship:
  • Assist with leading the bioinformatics core team, fostering a collaborative and innovative environment.
  • Coordinate regular cross-functional meetings and task assignments according to research priorities.
  • Bioinformatics and Omics Analysis:
  • Design and execute functional "omics" analysis pipelines.
  • Conduct in silico mining of existing databases to meet research requirements.
  • Perform bioinformatic analyses of in vivo and in vitro models to develop personalized performance approaches.
  • Integration and Innovation:
  • Integrate bioinformatics and metagenomic tools for real-time detection of human performance pathways using next-generation sequencing and other technologies.
  • Provide new science and technology solutions for integrating bench-level technical data.
  • Devise informatics solution pathways for integrated research programs.
  • Technical Support and Collaboration:
  • Provide technical review, data analysis, and computational approaches to accelerate programs and products for internal AF and external DoD customers.
  • Lead and participate in multidisciplinary partnerships with governmental, industrial, and academic entities to address DoD technical gaps.
  • Funding and Reporting:
  • Generate new grants and funding applications.
  • Prepare and submit internal and external technical reports and peer-reviewed manuscripts.
  • Present concepts and research results at scientific meetings and in publications.
  • Program Development:
  • Contribute to developing core research area program objectives using current and emerging bioscience knowledge.
  • Support key Division Lines of Effort (LoEs) with documentation of project progress, manuscript writing, and leadership briefs.

General Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Synthesize and analyze high-dimensional multi-omic data, with a strong emphasis on genetics/genomics.
  • Lead a diverse team of analysts supporting various 'omic discovery-oriented experimental datasets.
  • Provide logistical and scientific support to Division LoEs.
  • Mentor fellow researchers and coordinate cross-training and skills development opportunities for the team, such as journal clubs, technique demonstrations, coding seminars in R, and tech exchanges.

Required Qualifications

  • This position may be filled as a 5-year Flexible Length and Renewable Term Technical Appointment (new government hires, current government term employees, etc.) with the option to later convert to a permanent appointment.

  • This position may require travel.
  • This is an Acquisition Professional Development Program (APDP) position and requires a Level 2 certificate (Practitioner). The selectee must meet, or be capable of meeting, Defense Acquisition Work Improvement Act (DAWIA) requirements applicable to the duties of the position.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Applicants must have at least one (1) year or 52 weeks of specialized experience at the next lower grade of position being advertised, or equivalent in other pay systems.

Desired Qualifications

  • Educational Background:
  • MS in biostatistics, bioinformatics, computational biology, or a related field.
  • PhD is a plus.
  • Experience:
  • Expertise with human subjects research data, Personally Identifiable Information (PII), and healthcare-related traits.
  • Strong track record of analyzing genome-wide human data sets and complex sequencing data sets.
  • Experience developing, implementing, and evaluating novel bioinformatics algorithms and pipelines.
  • Experience with software programs and analytic platforms: R is required, and Python, Linux, & MatLab are highly desired.
  • First-author publications in human performance or related fields are highly desirable.
  • Skills and Competencies:

  • Ability to generate innovative science and technology solutions.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
