Position Focus

The Yale University Art Gallery (YUAG) seeks to fill a position of Curator responsible for oversight of the Gallery’s collection of art from the Ancient Mediterranean, Ancient Near East, and Ancient Americas. The Barreis Curator, reporting to the Chief Curator, will position the department of Ancient Art to serve the Yale University community as well as the larger public, and enhance the international profile of the collection. The Barreis Curator will be responsible for managing all aspects of the department and collection: planning exhibitions, programs, and publications; conferring on standards for collection care, preservation, conservation, and display; directing installation of the collection galleries; initiating research on acquisitions, loans, and on the permanent collection; lecturing on aspects of the Department’s holdings; fielding public inquiries; and assuming stewardship and donor cultivation responsibilities. The successful candidate will demonstrate a strong commitment to connoisseurship, academic engagement, research, and publication; be an acknowledged expert in some field of ancient art, and be an outstanding collaborator with the Gallery’s curatorial, conservation, and education departments, as well as with professional colleagues at the University.

Essential Duties of Position: Conceive and implement permanent collection displays, exhibitions, publications, and interpretive projects designed to promote knowledge of the arts of the ancient world, including public programs, wall texts and labels, brochures and instructional ephemera, electronic records, and permanent collection catalogues. Research and execute proposals for acquisitions through gift and purchase. Manage the Department of Ancient Art, supervising a curatorial colleague, departmental assistant, fellows and interns, and bursary students. Establish and implement the priorities for the department in consultation with the Chief Curator and the Director. Assume responsibility for the departmental budget and for exhibition and other project budgets. Contribute to and direct departmental staff in the maintenance of the collection database and its accessibility through YUAG’s website; assure the correctness, completeness, and dissemination of provenance information about works of art in the department’s care. Facilitate access to works of art and collection storage for faculty, students, and visiting scholars. Assume oversight of the maintenance and conservation of the collection; in collaboration with Conservation, evaluate the suitability of loan requests and perform or assign courier duties as necessary. Participate actively in fundraising for exhibitions, acquisitions, and departmental projects; assist with stewardship of the YUAG Governing Board, donors, collectors, students, and faculty. Serve on internal committees and represent the Gallery and University to local, national, and international communities to promote the institution and its collection. Contribute to the formulation and implementation of the Gallery's mission through active involvement in discussions with the Director, Chief Curator, other curators, and other leadership staff. Other projects and travel as requested by the Art Gallery.

Essential Duties

  • Serves as head of the curatorial department and manages its budget, activities, and staff. 2. Supervises and directs curatorial management of the collection, including its care, display, accession, and scholarly cataloguing. 3. Promotes knowledge of the collection through publications, exhibitions, installations, and teaching. 4. Determines priorities for department and its collection including teaching, acquisitions, exhibitions, publication, and conservation. 5. Determines the content of exhibitions, installations, and publications and directs their execution. 6. Develops a collection strategy to enhance, broaden, and expand the collection through gift and purchase. 7. Raises funds for exhibitions and acquisitions and stewards Governing Board members, donors, collectors, students, and faculty. 8. Teaches and lectures on collection and the area of expertise. 9. Represents the curatorial department on Gallery and University committees; represents the Gallery and University to a local, national, and international community to promote the institution and its collection. 10. May perform other duties as assigned.

Required Education And Experience

Ph.D in Art History plus at least eight years of related experience including a substantial record of major exhibitions, publications, acquisitions, and donor stewardship, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
