Job Summary

This position plans for and provides appropriate learning experiences, interventions, and educational opportunities for each student assigned to the classroom. Learning should be designed to bring students to grade level mastery of the Georgia Standards of Excellence as quickly as possible. The High School Band Director will be responsible for leading and managing the school's band program, including concert band, marching band, jazz band, and various ensemble groups.

Essential Job Functions

Instruction and Student Development:

  • Plans and leads daily rehearsals and classes for various ensembles, including concert band, jazz band, marching band, and smaller instrumental groups.
  • Provide individualized and small group instruction to students, focusing on improving their technical skills, musicality, and overall performance.
  • Develops and implements a comprehensive band curriculum that aligns with the Georgia Standards of Excellence and meets the diverse needs of students.
  • Selects appropriate and challenging repertoire for performances and competitions that enhances students’ musical growth and showcases their talents.
  • Prepares students for a variety of performances, including concerts, festivals, parades, and other school and community events, ensuring they are performance-ready and confident.
  • Utilizes various assessment techniques to monitor student progress, provide constructive feedback, and adjust instructional methods to support student growth and achievement.
  • Establishes and enforces standards of student behavior to maintain a disciplined and focused rehearsal environment conducive to learning and musical excellence.
  • Maintains regular communication with parents and guardians to provide updates on student progress, discuss performance opportunities, and collaborate on strategies to support student development.
  • Fosters a positive and encouraging atmosphere that motivates students to strive for excellence, develop a passion for music, and participate actively in the band program.
  • Participates in professional development opportunities to stay current with best practices in music education and continuously improve instructional techniques.

Program Development And Leadership

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive band program that promotes musical excellence and student growth.
  • Plan and conduct band rehearsals, ensuring that all students are engaged and progressing in their musical abilities.
  • Select appropriate music literature for performances and competitions.
  • Foster a positive and inclusive environment that encourages student participation and teamwork.

Event Planning And Coordination

  • Organize and oversee all band-related events, including concerts, festivals, parades, and fundraising activities.
  • Coordinate logistics for travel to competitions and performances.
  • Collaborate with school administration, parents, and community organizations to support band activities.

Administrative Duties

  • Manage the band program budget, including purchasing instruments, equipment, and music supplies.
  • Maintain accurate records of student attendance, grades, and inventory.
  • Ensure compliance with school policies and procedures.
  • Communicate effectively with students, parents, staff, and the community.
  • Participates in professional development opportunities focused on intervention strategies and best practices.
  • Administers assessments to measure student achievement of learning objectives and tracks progress towards identified intervention goals.
  • Maintains prompt, regular in-person attendance and availability during school business hours.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned by school administration to support the overall intervention program.

Minimum Education And Experience Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in music education from an accredited college or university required. Experience in providing individual and small group instruction preferred.

Knowledge, Skills And Abilities

  • Expertise in playing and teaching a variety of band instruments.
  • Strong understanding of music education principles and practices, with the ability to develop and implement effective instructional strategies.
  • Ability to lead and inspire students, fostering a positive and inclusive learning environment.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to effectively collaborate with students, parents, colleagues, and community members.
  • Strong organizational skills to manage multiple aspects of the band program, including rehearsals, performances, and administrative tasks.
  • Skill in designing and delivering a comprehensive band curriculum that meets educational standards and student needs.
  • Experience in planning and coordinating concerts, competitions, and other band-related events.
  • Proficiency in using various assessment techniques to monitor student progress and adjust teaching methods accordingly.
  • Familiarity with music-related technology and software for instruction, composition, and performance.
  • Flexibility and adaptability to meet the evolving needs of students and the music program.
  • Commitment to ongoing professional development and staying current with best practices in music education.
  • Ability to effectively manage time and resources to balance instructional and administrative responsibilities.
  • A genuine passion for music and dedication to fostering a love for music in students.

Certification, License And Special Requirements

  • Ability to obtain clearance certificate from GaPSC.
  • Valid state teaching certificate in Music.

Candidates must be certified in, or eligible for certification in Music (P-12).

Salary/Terms/Benefits

  • Salary based on certification and experience; placement on the Georgia Annual Salary Schedule and position supplement(s).
