As an Automation Department Manager, the general role is to manage the department from a high level and resolve issues between teams.

This individual will manage projects involving multiple departments and lead the team in the interpretation of job designs, ensure the jobs are constructed according to the project plans and lead project controls to include budgeting, planning/scheduling, designing, and programming.

The Automation Department Manager will report to the Division Manager and will work primarily out of the Knoxville location.

  • Training, coaching, developing, and mentoring
  • Conducting performance reviews and regularly discuss career goals on an ongoing basis
  • Responding to phone calls and texts after hours and on weekends within a timely manner
  • Serving as a focal point for resolving complex or escalated issues within the team
  • Providing leadership to interpret client requirements, identifying and address design parameters and engineering problems and ensuring solutions are implemented accurately and within budget
  • Managing projects involving coordination of multiple departments, primarily Automation and Engineering unless directed differently
  • Analyzing project requirements and performing technical calculations supporting designs, including electrical requirements
  • Attending technical sales calls and pre-bid meetings
  • Working directly with sales team in pre-sales technical concept, quoting, and budgeting activities
  • Being accountable for growth of customers and projects within Automation
  • Resolving operational issues to minimize delays and unexpected cost increases
  • Facilitating and supporting manufacturing processes and control systems within Operations
  • Provide high quality pre-sales, design-in and post-sales technical support to customer

  • Valid driver’s license
  • BA/BS in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in process control, automation, and/or engineering
  • Demonstrated aptitude to lead others
  • Proficient with MS Office productivity software
  • Proficient with reading and using AutoCAD
  • Strong working knowledge with Allen Bradley PLCs and RSLogix 5000,500 is preferred
  • HMI / OIT Development experience with Rockwell and/or Wonderware is preferred
  • Strong fundamental knowledge of control and electrical system design and its application in automated industrial designs including specification of vision, power, sensor, inspection, and communications systems
  • Ability to efficiently organize and plan work tasks to meet company goals
  • Critical thinking with exceptional problem-solving skills
  • Able to work independently and in team environments
  • Proactive, resourceful and highly motivated with good communication skills and ability to work in high output environment
  • Ability to balance multiple projects and coordinate with other departments
  • Good understanding of mechanical principals
  • Travel as required to support projects
  • Able to work a flexible schedule and adjust to changing business needs to include possible work involving emergency call-out, extended hours and some out-of-town and overnight work
  • Willingness to participate in Pillar Innovation’s Drug and Alcohol policy, which includes pre-employment, random, post-accident and reasonable suspicion drug and alcohol testing as requested


Working Conditions

  • Walk / use hands and fingers, handle or feel objects, tools or controls / reach with hands and arms / climb ladders and stairs / crawl / kneel
  • Wear safety equipment as per OSHA/MSHA requirements including but not limited steel toed and/or metatarsal shoes, hard hat, lanyard, fire retardant, protective eye wear, etc.
