Job Description

The New York Times audio team is seeking an audio engineer to work across all current and future shows and products in the Newsroom Audio portfolio. The audio engineer will play a crucial role in our post-production processes, and play a significant role in the ongoing development of audio best-practices by working closely with the audio engineering team, show producers and editors, as well as New York Times reporters and contributors.

This role will be the main point-of-contact for one or more shows. The right candidate can demonstrate the ability to clearly discuss audio engineering techniques, and confidently steer technical conversations with producers and editors. As a key player on the team, the Audio Engineer will develop strong working relationships with producers and editors in a creative environment.

Responsibilities


  • Primary support contact for one or more production teams
  • Serve as technical point person for Serial Productions alongside their Technical Director in order to assist in their transition into New York Times’ Audio operations.
  • Work on other NYT Audio shows as assigned.
  • Leads and maintains show-specific workflow and project management at the direction of engineering leadership.
  • Act as first line of defense in troubleshooting studio and Pro Tools workflow issues
  • Help train and assist staff in studio procedures, Pro Tools operation, and field recording best practices
  • General technical support including audio restoration, file management, host/guest setup, etc.
  • Assist in maintaining and deploying Pro Tools templates, SOPs, and other team-wide tools.
  • Collaborate with Sound Designer/Composers as directed.
  • Occasional evening and weekend technical support.
  • Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.


Basic Qualifications


  • 5+ years experience as an audio engineer (or equivalent position) required – podcast or broadcast environment preferred
  • Fluency in post-production mixing, audio technical support, and studio operations
  • Strong knowledge of Pro Tools, iZotope RX, as well as creative plug-ins like Echoboy
  • Comfortable with concept of Loudness and mixing to different specs
  • High level of proficiency with Apple computers

  • Ability to quickly, calmly and creatively troubleshoot complex issues under pressure
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities and follow through on projects to completion
  • Excellent attention to detail, with good organization and time management skills
  • Collaborative attitude and strong communication skills; with the ability to communicate complex technical information to people with technical and nontechnical backgrounds
  • Experience with electronic repair and maintenance (such as soldering) preferred

The annual base pay salary for this role is between $93,500.00 and $110,000.00
