Department Summary

The Athletic Communications Director leads all aspects of communication for the University of North Texas Dallas Athletics including the development and execution of communication strategies. The Director of Athletic Communications collaborates with applicable departmental units (e.g., University Relations, Creative Services and Marketing & Branding, etc.) in planning, editing and strategically telling the Athletic Department��s best stories while promoting and protecting the UNTD Athletics brand.

Position Overview

The Athletic Communications Director leads all aspects of communication for the University of North Texas Dallas Athletics including the development and execution of communication strategies. The Athletic Communications Director collaborates with applicable departmental units (e.g., University Relations, Creative Services and Marketing & Branding, etc.) in planning, editing and strategically telling the Athletic Department’s best stories while promoting and protecting the UNTD Athletics brand.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in journalism, communication or a related field and 3 years' of experience directly related to duties and responsibilities specified; or any equivalent combination of experience, education and training.

  • Skill in the use of personal computers, stream technology, film platforms (blueframe, HUDL, production truck, SkyCoach, ect…) and related software applications.
  • Ability to gather data, compile information and prepare reports.
  • Skill in organizing resources and establishing priorities.
  • Ability to use independent judgment, gather, manage and impart information to the media and other internal and external audiences.
  • Ability to make administrative and procedural decisions.
  • Ability to create, compose and edit written materials.
  • Ability to supervise and train employees.
  • Knowledge of printing procedures and requirements.
  • Knowledge of sporting press box procedures, techniques, facilities and equipment.
  • Media relations skills.
  • Interest in and appreciation of athletics generally, and student-athletes and college/university level athletics specifically.
  • Ability to work nights and weekends as needed.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Technological skills are critical to the efficient and effective performance of the Athletic Communications Director. Candidates must be able to demonstrate a high level of technological competency.

Job Duties

  • Write and edit promotional materials including press releases, newsletters, programs, and brochures; gather and compile statistical information.
  • Provide media training, as appropriate, for student athletes and coaches.
  • Write and produce collateral materials as needed to promote and/or support contests and other activities for all UNT Dallas intercollegiate athletics teams as well as the athletics department itself.
  • Manage updates to the athletics department website in a timely manner, including posting scores and statistical information within 24 hours of the completion of each contest.
  • Coordinate and execute visual streaming of contests, instant replay, Conference and NAIA expectations. Assure compliance with all NAIA and/or conference requirements for filming contests and posting those films as directed in a timely manner.
  • Coordinate with the marketing department for promotion of games, media day, campus tv's and other aspects of game promotion.
  • Develop a Records Repository to capture, organize, and maintain both individual and team statistics and records for publicity and historical purposes, as well as to satisfy all NAIA and/or conference requirements.
  • Develop a Photo/Video Capture System and maintain a library of images of individual student athletes and game action still images and/or videography.
  • Manage all aspects of game day including to, but not limited to game day workers, student workers, stream and instant replay set up. Assist athletic director with other game day aspects and activities.
  • Manage all aspect of the athletic department's social media to promote the department and the individual sports and student athletes.
