Job Overview
Reporting to the Vice Provost for Student Affairs, the Assistant Vice Provost for Student Advocacy/Dean of Students is a leader who fosters a positive campus environment, supports student success, and ensures and contributes to a holistic student experience. The AVP/Dean of Students must possess the skillset, ability, and desire to immerse themselves in the daily lives of students.
The AVP/Dean of Students collaborates with various stakeholders to support student well-being and success by providing advocacy, care, promoting accountability, and encouraging individual growth and development. This campus leader serves as a member of the Student Affairs Leadership Team, represents the Division of Student Affairs on campus committees, contributes to the general management and strategic planning of Student Affairs and leads policy, process, and procedure development for matters affecting students. This role provides sound and deliberate leadership and supervision to the following offices: Bearcats Pantry and Resource Center, CARE Team, Resident Education & Development, and Student Conduct and Community Standards.

Ten (10) years of progressively responsible senior-level experience in higher education, specifically in student affairs.

Essential Functions
- Develop relationships with campus/community partners, faculty, and institutional leaders to plan and implement strategic initiatives, collaborate on innovative projects, resolve issues, and promote a frictionless curricular and co-curricular experience.
- Support students in crisis or with family emergencies by providing case management and collaborating with relevant departments, faculty, and staff.
- Chair the CARE Team and related student advocacy, prevention, intervention, and response teams.
- Provide leadership and guidance in reviewing, creating, and interpreting student policies and procedures.
- Establish campuswide mechanisms to ensure students have access to basic needs like food, housing, and financial assistance.
- Foster collaborative partnerships with faculty, academic departments, staff, senior administrators, parents, and students to provide a learning environment that blends the classroom and out-of-classroom experience.
- Serve as a resource for faculty and staff on student behavioral issues.
- Create a welcoming, supportive, and vibrant community among a diverse student body including undergraduate, graduate, and professional students and a mix of residential, commuter, off-campus, and online students.
- Provide leadership for reporting departments in the areas of planning, human resources, policy development, operations, facilities, and budgets.
- Assist the Vice Provost in the planning and administration of the Division of Student Affairs.
- Provide vision for the development and implementation of a comprehensive student experience.
- Serve as a liaison to the Department of Public Safety and the University of Cincinnati Regional Campuses (Blue Ash, Clermont) for student conduct, advocacy, and crisis related matters.
- Use various platforms (emails, social media, campus announcements) to share important information and updates.
- Monitor budgets and provide effective and responsible fiscal planning.
- Assist in the assessment of case data to identify trends, areas for possible interventions, and evaluation of program effectiveness.
Master’s Degree
Required Experience
Ten (10) years of progressively responsible senior-level experience in higher education, specifically in student affairs.
Additional Qualifications Considered
- Terminal degree in education, counseling, psychology, or a related field.
- Knowledge of student rights, conduct, and compliance with state and federal guidelines.
- Strong leadership, management, supervisory, and collaboration skills.
- Demonstrated experience in managing crisis and difficult situations.
- At least five years of supervisory leadership.
- A strong commitment to urban higher education.
- Experience within a large multi-campus system.
