Department Statement

This is an exciting time to join Career Services at Colgate. Under Colgate’s Third Century Plan, the team launched a four-year career development model. Now, more than 80% of students are engaged in intentional, developmental, and individualized journeys of self discovery and experiential education in partnership with the Career Services team, leading them to a meaningful post-graduate outcome. This leadership role offers an experienced colleague the opportunity to leverage an already strong program and to work with a talented team of colleagues to build onto this demonstrated success. As a member of this department’s senior leadership team, the associate director will be pivotal in shaping the future direction of this essential and high-profile campus department. This team’s efforts consistently result in more than 98% of first destinations respondents being employed, securing graduate school admission or a competitive fellowship within six months of graduation. The next associate director will demonstrate strong competency in assessment, operational management, interpersonal communications, and leadership. They will possess a clear strengths-based approach to their work and a track record of leveraging practices that positively address constituents’ historical inequities.

Accountabilities

Accountable for providing the primary vision and leadership related to departmental operations and student engagement assessment. Directly oversee the administration of Career Services’ internship grant and fellowship initiatives. Indirectly oversee initiatives that leverage alumni/parent volunteer engagement (i.e. Sopho MORE Connections, alumni-led exploration and industry programming.

Responsible for developing sophisticated strategies to identify, track, and assess student engagement for the Career Services team. Accountable for deploying predictive, causal, and correlational analyses to inform and sustain exemplary and effective Career Services’ programming and advising. Independently prepare analyses and reports to educate campus leadership and to demonstrate outcomes and opportunities. Responsible for assisting departmental colleagues in developing initiatives with clear learning outcomes. Serve as a primary system administrator for Career Services’ student data systems, independently troubleshooting system functionality in collaboration with external vendors.

The associate director is responsible for the effective hiring, supervision, and performance management of all their direct and indirect reports – including professional staff and student interns. Provide timely performance evaluations, holding colleagues accountable, and create individualized plans for their development and professional growth. Responsible for ensuring fair and equitable decisions regarding employment (e.g.: hiring, promotion, termination).

Regarding internship grant initiatives, the associate director is responsible for creating application processes, reviewing policies and procedures, facilitating candidate selection, and holding students accountable for following through on commitments. Responsible for recruiting, training, and managing selection committees of faculty, alumni, and professional staff involved in internship and grant selection. In consultation with AVP for Career Initiatives, responsibly steward endowed and current use funds alongside Advancement colleagues and in compliance with Federal and State laws. Independently oversee grant disbursement in compliance with Colgate policies.

Responsible for overseeing the Career Services team’s creation, development, and execution of large-scale and small-scale alumni/parent-led career exploration and industry programming. Alongside their Career Services colleagues, engage a wide range of volunteers that represent the breadth of opportunities available for liberal arts students. Accountable for supporting front desk management and Benton Hall building management in partnership with the office manager. Create processes to ensure high levels of satisfaction with intake procedures.

Working closely with the Office of Communications embedded professional, help articulate Career Services’ needs and ensure communications deliverables are aligned with departmental goals and strategies. Develop communications aimed at increasing students’ awareness of and engagement with Career Services’ resources and initiatives.

Requirements

Professional Experience/ Qualifications

  • Prior experience directly supervising colleagues and managing teams to produce high quality work
  • Data assessment experience and a demonstrated ability to synthesize and analyze quantitative and qualitative data. Proficiency in Excel is required.
  • Two or more years of project or event management experience.
  • Ability to concurrently manage multiple projects independently.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills; strong organizational and analytical skills, and the ability to set priorities and take initiative.
  • A demonstrated ability for building relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Passion for the advantages of a liberal arts degree and the ability to communicate its value proposition with various constituents.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior student affairs and/or advising, career services, or recruitment experience.
  • Prior volunteer management experience, especially with a traditional college-aged student population.
  • CRM technology experience is helpful.

Education

Must have a minimum of a Bachelor’s degree.

A Master’s degree preferred.
