Job Summary

The LHS E-STAR Center Associate Program Director (APD) will collaborate with three Principal Investigators to design and develop the program components of the Center and administer the full range of operational requirements necessary to meet the Center’s aims. In this capacity, the APD will coordinate the activities of the three cores of the center: the Administrative Core (AC), the Research Education Core (REC), and the Research and Data Analytics Core (RDAC). The APD will oversee all administrative operations, finance, human resources, grants management, and facilities for the program. The APD will also work with the Center faculty on formulating short and long-term planning and procedures and will staff the Center’s Advisory Council. The APD will work closely with, and delegate as needed to the post-award analyst and communications manager and will supervise one 0.5 FTE administrative coordinator.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $105,900 - $166,900 (Annual Rate).

Department Description

The Clinical and Translational Science Institute (CTSI) is a large, highly complex research unit within the Office of the AVC-CR that spans the four UCSF health science schools (Medicine, Pharmacy, Nursing and Dentistry), the UCSF Graduate Division, and collaborating affiliates of UCSF. The mission of CTSI is to facilitate clinical and translational research to improve patient and community health. CTSI does this by providing infrastructure, services, and training to make research more efficient. CTSI develops broad coalitions and partnerships at the local, regional, and national levels to enable a transformation of the research environment. CTSI has $25-$28M in annual funding from multiple sources (NIH, institutional, philanthropy, industry and other) and includes 20 interdisciplinary programs.

UCSF is one of 16 new Learning Health System (LHS) Centers of Excellence funded by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) and the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) to support the training of researchers to conduct patient-centered outcomes research within learning health systems. UCSF's Embedded Scientist Training and Research (E-STAR) LHS Center will produce the next generation of researchers to conduct patient-centered outcomes research and implement the results to improve quality of care and patient outcomes. Newly trained clinician and research scientists will work within health systems by collaborating with systems’ leaders and conducting studies to address how healthcare organizations can improve patient outcomes.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a related area (BA, BS ) and / or equivalent experience / training required
  • Academic background and experience in selected area of research
  • Five of more years of academic senior program management experience with a large complex organization
  • Advanced knowledge of administrative, budgetary, human resources and financial principles and practices
  • Advanced oral and written communication skills
  • Advanced ability to think creatively and independently on concepts requiring advanced analytical skills
  • Advanced interpersonal skills and ability to work with diverse groups to achieve results
  • Demonstrated leadership and supervisory/management skills
  • Demonstrated fiscal management experience, including budget development and financial analysis skills
  • Advanced ability to work collaboratively with internal and external peers and managers

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in a related area (MS, MA, MPH)
  • Lean Six Sigma Certificate
