Associate or Full Specialist- Burlingame Lab- 2023/24

Position Description

Associate or Full Specialist- Burlingame Lab – 2023/24

Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry University of California, San Francisco

The Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry is now recruiting a Specialist at the Associate or Full ranks. These positions in the Burlingame lab focus on processing and mass spectrometric analyses of Campus and Adelson Medical Research Foundation (AMRF) consortium investigators’ requirements to obtain proteomic insights into cell composition and molecular level physiology and their posttranslational regulation.

Under the general direction of the director of the Mass Spectrometry Facility (MSF) and as a member of a collaborative research team of MSF scientists, the Specialist at Full rank, will participate in a variety of on-going research activities using mass spectrometry and proteomics for gaining new protein-level knowledge for a wide range of biological investigations, including for example in neuroscience, cancer biology, etc.

The Specialist at the Associate or Full rank will support a number of local, national and international collaborative research projects involving the discovery of new proteins using a number of methods based on affinity methods for sample isolations, chromatography for separation of complex mixtures and mass spectrometry-based peptide sequence analyses for identification of both knowns and unknowns.

The successful candidate’s responsibilities will include sample preparation for mass spectrometric analyses of many different types of biological samples generated from different collaborative projects. This involves performing and optimizing protocols for enzymatic digestion and posttranslational modification class (PTM) enrichments, analyzing samples by advanced mass spectrometric methodologies and the interpretation (qualitative and quantitatively) of the experimental mass spectral data obtained, and preparing reports summarizing results for review and manuscript preparation.

These tasks will require particular emphasis on use of customized software tools for processing and analysis of mass spectrometry datasets, e.g. from isotopically labelled samples, in the assignment of post translational modifications of proteins, etc., using tools in Protein Prospector and Skyline for example.

Required Qualifications

  • Candidate must have a master’s degree (or equivalent degree) in Chemistry, Biochemistry, or a closely related field OR five to ten years of relevant specialization to be appointed at the Associate rank.
  • Candidate must have a terminal degree (or equivalent degree) in Chemistry, Biochemistry, or a closely related field OR ten or more years of relevant specialization to be appointed at the Full rank.
  • Track record of communication skills, including, but not limited to, working effectively in a team.
  • Candidate must meet the qualifications at the time of hire. Candidate’s CV or cover must state qualifications (or if pending) upon submission.

Screening of applicants will begin immediately and will continue as needed throughout the recruitment period. Salary and rank will be commensurate with the applicants experience and training.
