Position Overview

The International Communications Associate is a dynamic communications professional with a strong interest in media relations and communications advocacy, sitting on our fast-paced international communications team. Headquartered in Washington, D.C., Tobacco-Free Kids works in dozens of countries around the world to advocate for proven policies to reduce tobacco use. The international communications team works with the world’s leading news outlets to drive top-tier news coverage of public health issues and supports innovative advocacy campaigns around the world.


The Associate supports the Director of Media Relations in driving leading news coverage of tobacco control-related issues, building and supporting relationships with top-tier journalists and news outlets around the world and planning and implementing leading communications initiatives via traditional and digital media.


The International Communications Associate reports to the Director of Media Relations and is based in our Washington, D.C. office.


WHAT YOU'LL ACCOMPLISH:

  • Report to and work closely with the Director of Media Relations to implement media strategies aimed at increasing the quality and quantity of news stories focused on key topics such as tobacco taxation, graphic health warnings, smoke-free public places, tobacco industry marketing tactics and advertising bans.
  • Draft high-quality communications materials and documents including press releases, media memos and pitches.
  • Assist the Director of Media Relations in preparing spokespeople for interviews including drafting talking points, scheduling interviews and overseeing logistics.
  • Work with the Associate Director of Digital Strategy to draft high-quality content for social media including graphics and written content. Support implementation of global tobacco control digital communications strategy.
  • Serve as liaison for the international communications team to the global youth advocacy summits including attending trainings and presenting on best practices in communications and media advocacy.
  • Coordinate media monitoring across priority countries including management of media monitoring vendors and contracts in ten or more countries.
  • Oversee contracts for key social listening and communications tools. Serve as an internal and external point of contact for systems used by the International Communications team.
  • Monitor and provide regular updates on tobacco industry marketing tactics, including tobacco industry marketing tactics on social media.
  • Lead the development and dissemination of the quarterly global tobacco control newsletter to external audiences, health, economic and business issues.
  • Receive and compile media monitoring reports from priority countries. Produce media coverage reports or clippings compilations as requested.
  • Assist the Director and other team members in planning and executing training and capacity-building events for advocates and journalists. Provide support for events at international conferences and meetings as required.
  • Research and compile monthly and quarterly reports on communications activities for internal and external audiences, including maintaining tracking tools of the International Communications Unit’s activities and metrics of performance.
  • Work collaboratively with website management team to schedule and generate content on international tobacco control activities, and draft web and other online content as needed.
  • Assist in collecting and uploading tobacco control campaign content – including documents and graphics – to an online advocacy support center.
  • Manage an online resource hub on emerging tobacco products.
  • Produce our bi-monthly international communications snapshot.


SKILLS YOU'LL BRING TO THE ROLE:

  • A keen desire to exercise your love for strategic communications to alleviate social injustice.
  • Bachelor’s degree in communications or related field required.
  • Up to two years of experience in communications, preferably in a policy or advocacy setting – this may include relevant internships.
  • Excellent writing and editing skills. Strong grasp of AP style.
  • Strong interest in media relations, news, and communications advocacy.
  • Interest in and understanding of social media platforms including TikTok, Instagram, X and Facebook.
  • Team-player attitude and ability to handle multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.
  • Experience working at the international level and in cross-cultural settings preferred.
  • Willingness and desire to travel internationally.
  • Foreign language proficiency a plus.
