Essential Job Duties

NC State magazine is published three times a year and sent to alumni, friends and supporters of NC State with a goal of strengthening the bond between readers and the university. The associate editor of NC State magazine will be responsible for generating story ideas, writing articles, working with free-lance writers and editing and proofreading. We are looking for an individual who is creative, disciplined and enterprising and who will thrive on working with a lively team.

The associate editor will work closely with the editor and other staff, including designers, to help determine the editorial content of the magazine, contributing ideas for stories, visuals and headlines. The associate editor will direct the magazine website, magazine.ncsu.edu, while creating lists of stories to promote in consultation with the social media team of University Communications. The position will also be responsible for working with a contractor to organize and help edit the magazine’s Class Notes section.

Other Responsibilities

Must assist other staff, as needed, at events that may occur at night or on the weekend. Other duties as deemed necessary by the editor.

Qualifications

Minimum Experience/Education

Bachelor’s degree in a discipline related to the area of assignment; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Other Required Qualifications

  • Excellent interviewing, writing and copy-editing skills.
  • Commitment to accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Able to juggle projects under deadline pressure amid changing priorities.
  • Able to adhere to journalistic standards while meeting the objectives of University Communications.
  • Excellent grammar skills and knowledge of AP style.
  • Able to develop and build relationships across the university.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Long-form narrative writing experience.
  • Copy-editing experience.
  • Experience working in higher education or an understanding of land grant, research Tier One university environment
  • Experience with WordPress.
  • Knowledge of social media
