Scope Of Responsibilities

The Associate Director for New Student and Family Programs (NSFP) provides vital leadership in Duke’s support of both new students and families. To support incoming students, the Associate Director will advise a team of paid student leaders in the design, implementation, and execution of Experiential Orientation, a signature program of QuadEx. Additionally, they will work in collaboration with other members of the team to build meaningful relationships and partnerships across campus to better the onboarding of all students through the coordination and communication of Welcome Weeks and other innovative onboarding efforts.

The Associate Director will also be the team lead for all Family Programs. This includes leading our partnership with families as they support their students through their educational journeys. Programs include Family Weekend, monthly newsletters, and regular programming that keeps families engaged, connected, and equipped to support their student.

Duties

Program Planning

30%

  • Lead the planning and execution of Duke University’s engagement with the undergraduate family community. This includes, but is not limited to, Family Weekend, Parent & Family Orientation, ongoing parent/family communication, webinars/programs for families, and a growing need for better engagement with families of first-generation college students.
  • Support the Duke Parents Advisory Committee as it seeks to partner with Student Affairs for the betterment of the Duke undergraduate experience.
  • Coordinate Welcome weeks in partnership with Student Involvement and Leadership.
  • Lead office efforts to expand accessibility of office programming for first-generation college students.
  • Represent New Student and Family Programs in campuswide efforts to support the first-year experience throughout the academic year.

Advisement

30%

  • Advise up to 7 Experiential Orientation projects, including guiding student leaders in the design, implementation, and execution of Orientation Week.
  • Support the ongoing development of our student leaders as they learn project management, leading a team of peers, and executing a highly logistical program.

Administrative Responsibilities

  • Supervise a full-time staff member through their ongoing professional development, goal setting and effectiveness, and work/life balance.

CONSTITUENT OUTREACH

  • Design and conduct training sessions for students, faculty, and staff related to the matriculation process for new students.

  • Partner with campus offices to communicate effectively with all families.
  • Serve on rotation to support and respond to the general questions from students, families, campus partners, and other stakeholders.
  • Represent the New Student and Family Programs office on select departmental and divisional committees as well as at national conferences and professional meetings.

Other Duties And Responsibilities

  • The Office of New Student and Family Programs is a hub of innovation and serves as an essential office within QuadEx. As such, there may be other opportunities to support Duke’s campuswide commitment to belonging, engagement, and well-being.

General Qualifications

Work generally requires a master’s degree in higher education/student services and four years of experience in higher education or a related setting. Background in advising/counseling students and experience in building community, sense of belonging, supporting holistic wellness, and program administration are highly preferred.

OR an equivalent combination of relevant education and/or experience.

  • Demonstrated achievement in student organization advising.
  • Experience in program development, event planning, assessment, and data-driven improvement.
  • Demonstrates and supports a culture of diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Strong attention to accuracy and detail.
  • Skills relevant to establishing and maintaining successful partnerships with students/families, alumni, parents, faculty/staff, administration, members of the community, and other stakeholders.
  • Use of sound judgment and critical thinking skills particularly related to handling crisis and confidential matters.
  • Preference for a candidate who has experience supporting student who are 1st generation and lower income.

Minimum Qualifications

Education

Work requires analytical, organizational and communication skills generally acquired through completion of a master's degree program.

Experience

Work generally requires four years experience in personnel, college or OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE university administration, or a related field to acquire skills necessary to provide program management, advising and general administrative support.
