Job Summary

This is a critical, and highly visible role in the Global Accounting team at BioCryst. The Assoc. Director, Accounting is responsible for accounting operations and related financial / operational internal controls of the Company. In addition, the Assoc. Director, Accounting is responsible for all internal financial reporting and managing a team of Accountants.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Manage monthly close activities, including preparing accrual estimates and related journal entries, reconciling balance sheet and P&L accounts, and performing various analytical reviews. Accounting areas include R&D accruals, SG&A accruals, cash.
  • Lead and manage a team of accountants; provide direction and coaching.
  • Maintain and monitor an effective, SOX compliant internal control structure. Prepare requested analyses, reports and documentation to ensure efficient internal and external audit processes.
  • Prepare and compile various periodic reports / analysis, allowing management to make appropriate and timely business decisions.
  • Interface with external auditors, tax specialists, and internal auditors.
  • Ensure reporting compliance with various census requests and other filings for the Company.
  • Identify, develop, implement, and maintain systems, policies and procedures to promote appropriate internal controls, best practices and efficient and cost-effective processes.
  • Monitor areas of responsibility on a continual basis to identify process and efficiency improvements (e.g., automation).
  • Complete various other ad-hoc analyses as directed by the Executive Director and other members of the Finance department.

Experience & Qualifications

  • Undergraduate degree in accounting or finance (MBA a plus) with 8 or more years of total accounting experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Active CPA license required
  • Big 4 audit experience required (3 years strongly preferred)
  • 5-7 years of accounting and financial process experience
  • Experience working with a global, publicly traded company
  • Strong understanding of general accounting standards and principles including foreign exchange and global consolidations
  • Previous hands-on experience for R&D accruals and SG&A accruals in a life sciences company
  • Results-driven, team-oriented member/leader that is highly organized, detail-oriented, and thorough with an exceptional ability to follow projects through to completion
  • Articulate and professional with excellent people skills, a positive attitude, and a strong work ethic
  • Experience with Oracle Fusion preferred
  • Skilled in Microsoft Office and close management tools
