Assistant Unit Manager (Probation Supervisor I)

Job Announcement

Under general direction of the Unit Manager of Supervised Release Services, assists the Unit Manager with overseeing and administering all of the unit’s operations within Supervised Release.

Directly supervises SRS probation staff (typically 3 positions) and unit admin support staff (typically 2 positions.) Coordinates the operation of that program. Assigns cases, schedules staff and provides direct staff supervision. Monitors program standards, addresses deficiencies. Maintains stock and inventory of equipment. Provides program reports, analyzes data and provides summaries and assessments of program outcomes. Performs other duties as assigned. May be required to conduct field visits and train new and existing staff in field operations and other case management duties. Ensuring knowledge and proficiency with approved case management practices, evidence-based services, agency policies, state standards, legal requirements, and the Code of Virginia. Assists the Unit Manger with ongoing QA/CQI activities supporting initiatives.

Flexibility in this role is essential, as the Unit Manager may assign other duties and responsibilities as required, adapting to the evolving needs of the agency and unit.

Salary: Effective July 13, 2024, compensation plans will be increased by 2% (market rate adjustment): https://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/hr/fy-2025-compensation-plan

Required Knowledge Skills And Abilities

Knowledge of the principles and practices of psychology and sociology;

Knowledge of the practices and procedures of casework supervision and intake activities;

Knowledge of related Federal, State and local juvenile and domestic relations laws;

Knowledge of current trends and methods of treating delinquency and related problems;

Knowledge of judicial administrative operational policies and procedures;

Ability to train and supervise;

Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with a variety of individuals;

Ability to interpret laws, rules, and regulations related to probation work and victim services; Ability to interview and counsel clients;

Ability to prepare complete case records and reports;

Ability to use technology to enter and retrieve information.

Employment Standards

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

A Master's degree in social/behavioral sciences, law enforcement, or education; plus three years of professional experience in probation/court services work.

CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:

Valid driver's license (Required at the time of application)

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

The appointee to the position will be required to complete the following to the satisfaction of the employer:

  • Criminal Background Investigation
  • Child Protective Services Registry Check
  • Driving Record Check

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Degree in a related field.
  • Experience working with juveniles in a correctional or court setting.
  • Experience working with pretrial cases, including supervision, electronic monitoring, and filing court violations.
  • Experience working with BADGE or similar criminal justice database system or public safety software.
  • Experience working with electronic monitoring systems.
  • Experience in probation and/or pretrial work.
  • Experience working with children and families.
  • Experience working in case management.
  • Experience testifying in court and making recommendations.
  • Experience in the utilization of risk assessments.
  • Working knowledge in the areas of juvenile justice transformation, evidence-based practices, the Code of Virginia, and Department of Juvenile Justice state standards.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be able to access buildings & environments that are not ADA accessible.
  • Lift up to 30 pounds, crawl, kneel, and stand for prolonged periods.
  • Hearing & speaking ability sufficient to use public safety radio system routinely, including while under physical duress.
  • Job requires the ability to walk, carry related materials.
  • Must be able to operate computers, keyboards, phones and related instruments.
  • Must be able to read computer screens, manage small parts & tools related to electronic monitoring equipment.
  • Must have sufficient visual acuity, hearing, and physical hand strength and ability to drive and operate agency safety equipment.
