Assistant Superintendent (Chief Academic Officer)

The Superintendent of Schools announces the following position within the Fall River Public School System:

Position: Assistant Superintendent (Chief Academic Officer)

Job Description: The Assistant Superintendent/Chief Academic Officer is a cabinet level position responsible for the direct administrative supervision of schools and the departments of learning and teaching (curriculum, instruction, professional development), data and accountability, English language learners, and technology . The Assistant Superintendent works in partnership with the Superintendent's cabinet to fulfill the mission of the Fall River Public Schools and achieve the School Committee's strategic goals. The Assistant Superintendent is responsible for the academic outcomes for ALL students in the Fall River Public Schools and works to close student achievement gaps, improve student performance results, and build innovative curriculum and co-curricular enrichment opportunities to meet the academic and SEL needs of students. The Assistant Superintendent provides the instructional and curricular leadership that creates, implements, maintains, and enhances excellence, scholarship, creativity, and achievement for all students. The Assistant Superintendent serves as leader and chief of the curriculum, acts as the instructional leader of the district, and the primary evaluator of curricular coordinator/director administrators. The Assistant Superintendent ensures the district/school educational objectives are aligned to state frameworks and to research-based instructional practices that yield the highest standards of student achievement, instructional excellence, and community support in all subject areas. The Assistant Superintendent assists the Superintendent in the daily leadership of the system and engages in all district matters as defined by the Superintendent. The Assistant Superintendent serves as the acting superintendent at the request of or in the absence of the Superintendent.

Performance Responsibilities

Data Analysis :

  • Uses local and state achievement data to develop and guide effective curriculum, instruction and assessment practices.
  • Engages administration in ongoing analysis of available data (suspension rates, referrals to special education...) to maximize time on learning, identify effective learner supports and interventions.
  • Mobilizes local systems of improvement which are based on national and state educational requirements (eg, educator evaluation, Every Student Succeeds Act, RETELL...).
  • Use student achievement data to target human and budgetary resources to close achievement gaps and increase student performance and SEL outcomes.
  • Ensure evaluation of instructional programs for their effectiveness in improving student achievement.
  • Coordinate all measurement, testing and assessment (PARCC/MCAS), and reporting to state agencies.
  • Analyze student performance trend data to define critical areas of focus.
  • Evaluate system-wide instructional improvements by coordinating local and state testing.
  • Establish protocols for consistent formative assessment practices, K-12.
  • Provide relevant data and data analysis to schools to assist school improvement teams with analysis of student learning.

Curriculum Development

  • Develop, publicize, and revise curriculum maps for all core content and specialized content areas.
  • Regularly review curriculum materials to update and align with content standards.
  • Develops curriculum steering opportunities for teachers to unpack state standards in all content areas for the purpose of effective lesson and unit design, assessment, and pacing.
  • Ensures that instructional teams engage in an ongoing cycle of professional practice (looking at student work, data analysis, and responsive lesson design) to maximize instruction and opportunity for differentiation.

Instructional And Operational Leadership

  • Serve as the acting superintendent in the absence of the Superintendent.
  • Serve on the Executive Leadership Team.
  • Visit school sites frequently to determine how best to support schools meet the needs of students.
  • Actively participate in state-level learning networks, community improvement efforts, and state/national professional learning opportunities.
  • Develop a district instructional model and create a review team to monitor and provide feedback on progress towards achieving consistency across all schools / classrooms in the system.
  • Assist the superintendent in crisis management and district-wide leadership.
  • Assure the alignment of district instruction with state frameworks and accountability standards.
  • Organize, facilitate, and work with the district’s instructional committees, task forces, and special focus groups.
  • Develop policy and budget recommendations with Superintendent.
  • Supervise and evaluate principals working with the Superintendent and other members of the Executive Leadership Team.
  • Manage federal, state, local and private grants for instruction.
  • Develop an action plan with Superintendent to meet School Committee strategic goals.
  • Attend School Committee meetings.
  • Work with parents to resolve conflicts and disciplinary issues.
  • Coordinate adult and community education.
  • Assume any responsibilities and duties deemed appropriate by the Superintendent.

Required Qualifications

  • Appropriate Massachusetts licensure: Superintendent/Assistant Superintendent.
  • Minimum of a Master's Degree.
  • Five-years successful experience in school administration related to instruction and evaluation.
  • Five-years of successful teaching experience.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.

  • Positive attitude, abundant energy, and demonstrated above-board approach for systemic improvement.
  • Successful Site/District level Leadership.
  • Track record of improving student achievement results.
  • Earned Doctorate.
  • Demonstrated commitment to personal growth, diversity, cultural proficiency, equity, justice, and mission.

The Superintendent of Schools reserves the right to waive a position qualification or determine that there is an acceptable alternative to that qualification. If the Superintendent intends to waive a qualification, such intent will be shared with the Fall River School Committee.

Reports To: Superintendent

Supervises: District Instructional Staff to include central office administrators and principals

Terms of Employment: Salary and benefits to be negotiated. Twelve (12) month employee, hours of employment shall be established within an individual contract

Salary: $147,290 - $172,777
