Assistant Special Education Director - Academics

Under the direction of the Director of Special Education, the Assistant Director of Special Education- Academics is responsible for oversight of the day-to-day academic functions of the Special Education programs. The Assistant Director of Special Education-Academics ensures compliance with practices, and procedures through technical assistance to staff, parents, and others as required.

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in education
  • Valid Texas Teaching Certificate in special education

  • Required Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities (KSAs)

  • Experience in conducting professional development
  • Strong leadership, organizational, interpersonal, and organizational skills
  • Ability to work well with diverse populations
  • Ability to evaluate instructional programs and teaching effectiveness

  • Responsibilities And Duties

    Provides administrative oversight of District special education academic programs:

  • Provides administrative oversight of District special education academic programs.
  • Provides administrative oversight to home office academic Special Education staff (ARD-Fs & coordinators only).
  • Consults with campus leadership regarding special education student needs and emergency situations.
  • Assists the Director in analyzing, developing, and modifying special education programs to meet the needs of students.

  • Education

    Provides consultation, coaching, and technical assistance to school staff, parents and others regarding special education local, state, and federal rules, policies and practices. Ensures compliance of special education laws, rules, policies, practices, and procedures:

  • Determines the need for and facilitates monthly staff development for special education staff, procedures, instruction, compliance, etc.
  • Works with new staff to acquaint them with District procedures and practices.
  • Provides information to parents regarding the referral/assessment process, special education services available within the district, and their rights relative to special education.
  • Consults and problem-solves with campus leadership and special education staff regarding difficult and/or potentially litigious special education issues.
  • Monitors compliance with special education procedures, staff caseloads, and continuum of services within the District.
  • Routinely reviews and audits student Individual Education Plans to ensure compliance.

  • Provides administrative oversight for teaching and learning for students in special education:

  • Responsible for leading and evaluating the school's Special Education curriculum and instruction for all grades.
  • Plans and conducts periodic evaluations to assess the need for changes in the curriculum.
  • Build relationships with content area specialists to get Special Education teachers content support with teaching and learning.
  • Plan or conduct professional development for teachers by providing them with additional support needed to implement various instructional programs and practices.

  • Performs other comparable duties of a like or similar nature:

  • Attends training sessions, conferences, seminars, department and district meetings.
  • Serves on District committees, task forces, work groups, etc., as requested.
  • Keeps abreast of changing developments, trends, instructional and educational technologies.
