Job Description

Van Acker Construction (VAC) is looking for an Assistant Site Superintendent experienced in estate landscape construction and site civil engineering to join our project team on a high-end residential construction project south of Portland.

The Assistant Superintendent oversees the efficient, effective, and safe execution of exterior hardscape and landscape construction on a multi-acre site. This field-based role is perfect for someone with experience running their own landscape business, working as a superintendent on complex landscape construction projects, or even working as an experienced civil engineer for a general contractor. You’ll lead subcontractors, coordinate utilities and site layout, and bring landscape architect designs to life.

As Construction Managers and General Contractors, Van Acker Construction (VAC) is the firm with overall responsibility for all activities on the project. The Assistant Site Superintendent reports to the overall Site Superintendent and works in coordination with the site team, which consists of multiple superintendents, assistant superintendents, and subcontractors.

This position is expected to start in August-September 2024 and last 2 years.

Job Duties

Include but are not limited to the following:

  • Manage and direct all exterior activities, including but not limited to planting and irrigation, carpentry, masonry, paving, lighting, drainage, grading, and coordination with utility companies, on day-to-day and long-term planning basis
  • Manage subcontractors, engineers, and consultants to keep project on schedule and on budget; take accountability for the work of their team
  • Proactively identifies, addresses, and resolves issues in the field while meeting project needs and expectations
  • Develop an effective and on-going landscape asset management plan
  • Familiar with landscape equipment and their functions, as well as safe operating procedures
  • Other duties may include progress assessments and reports; assisting in updating budgets, analyzing material use and time constraints, and inspection work
  • Communicate effectively with site office, field personnel including site superintendent. Support site superintendent in administrative tasks as required throughout project

Education, Experience And Skills

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Landscape Architecture or Horticulture, Construction Management, Civil Engineering or related field or equivalent in years of experience
  • Minimum 10 years related work experience
  • Professionalism in dealing with Architects, Subcontractors, Consultants, Engineers, and co-workers
  • Independent and self-starting with strong attention to details, deadlines, and a commitment to excellence
  • Thorough and confident understanding of math, job cost tracking, and budgeting
  • Looks ahead and organizes activities to stay on top of the project’s needs
  • Ownership: Is committed to the success of the project, their teammates, and the company
  • Leadership: inspires and motivates others, resolves conflicts while minimizing drama, and adapts to change
  • Must meet the physical demands of the job: sit, stand, walk on uneven surfaces, reach, bend, twist, stoup, crouch, climb and balance; frequently required to lift and/or move up to 30 pounds; operate / drive machinery; frequent use of hands and tools
  • Must live in the local area and be authorized to work in the U.S.

Base salary is $90,000k - $110,000k (DOE), plus annual discretionary bonus. Please note the posted salary is a base range and will be adjusted for skillset and experience.

This is a full time exempt (salaried) position working on the jobsite south of Portland Monday through Friday. Overtime may be required during various phases of the project. The Assistant Superintendent will also be required to drive from time-to-time and must meet the Company’s driving requirements.
