The Assistant Provost of Student Affairs reports to the Associate Provost for Student Affairs and Dean of Students (ASPA/DOS), serves as the point of contact in the absence of the ASPA/DOS, and is a member of the Student Affairs leadership team. The position shares in the development and management of the Student Affairs unit and supports the mission of Student Success and Engagement and of The New School. The Assistant Provost is a highly engaging, student-centered leader that plays a critical role in shaping campus life and student engagement, leading the areas of Residential Education, Student Conduct & Community Standards and Student Support & Advocacy.

This position plays an essential role in the implementation and execution of student safety and support initiatives. This would include advancing the university's communication and programming to enhance safety and embrace diversity and inclusion, working collaboratively with Campus Safety and Facilities to advocate for enhanced security measures for students who commute and those who live in our residential community. This role is also tasked with building relationships with our external community to enhance partnerships around community safety. Additionally, this position works collaboratively with students, faculty, and administration to enhance the student experience for a population of 10,000 students. This position will have on-call responsibilities in collaboration with the AP/DOS.

Responsibilities

  • Serves as a member of the Associate Provost of Student Affairs, Dean of Students leadership team and assists in developing, implementing, and assessing Student Success’s mission and priorities.
  • Develop a vision/direction for the department focusing on student-centered decision-making, collaboration among staff, and building community across campus.
  • Provides direct supervision, ongoing development, and leadership for the areas of Residential Education, Student Conduct & Community Standards and Student Support & Advocacy.
  • Directs the development, implementation, and evaluation of all university-wide evidence-based initiatives that address student safety and well-being issues to promote student success.
  • Foster positive working relationships with campus partners, specifically in Campus Safety, Housing Services, Student Leadership, Involvement and Transition Experience.
  • Directs the daily operations of the office, including the development of effective outreach, peer initiatives, activities, and prevention programs.
  • Work collaboratively with Campus Safety to create programs and initiatives that promote awareness of safety. Develop a National Campus Safety Awareness Month program for The New School, collaborating with partners across campus, including Campus Safety.
  • Manages university compliance with numerous student-oriented policies and regulations and proposes updates as needed, including Alcohol and Drug, Student Code of Conduct (serves as an appeals officer), Title IX, ADA 504, and Clery.
  • Meets with students, faculty, staff, and guests regarding issues, complaints, campus processes, conduct issues, and general concerns, while working collaboratively with campus partners to resolve issues.
  • Participates in university-wide events, including residence hall openings, Orientation, Welcome Week, Family Weekend, Discovery Days, and Commencement.
  • Serve in an on-call capacity for university wide crisis situations.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master’s degree and minimum eight years (8) years of progressive experience in higher education, business administration, educational leadership or a closely related field.
  • Experience developing outcome-based student engagement and learning initiatives, and retention efforts.
  • Demonstrated intercultural competence, and a continuing commitment to advance equity, inclusion, and social justice practices in support of a diverse community.
  • Experience supervising professional staff members.
  • Demonstrated ability to trouble-shoot, problem-solve, and anticipate issues needing resolution.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently as well as within a team in a fast-paced and adaptive environment, remaining flexible, proactive, resourceful, and professional.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Involved regionally or nationally in professional development associations within higher education.
  • Experience managing a Residential Education program.
  • Experience in Student Conduct.
  • Experience in Student Care interventions.

WORK MODE

  • Hybrid/Split - Employees hired for this position have regularly scheduled, consistent percentage of time on campus (eg: 1-4x/week) and also work some of the time remotely.

SALARY

$110,000 - $120,000 per annum
