The Research Focus For This Position Will Be

  • Spinal Cord Injury: studying mechanisms of spinal cord injury and developing novel therapies
  • Spinal Cord Stimulation: Developing and refining techniques for motor restoration in ALS patients can pave the way for breakthrough treatments.
  • Novel Biomarkers: Identifying and validating biomarkers for SCI can lead to early diagnosis, better monitoring, and personalized treatment approaches.
  • Prognostic Tools: Creating clinical prognostic tools for tumors, trauma, and degenerative disorders will enhance patient care by allowing more accurate predictions of disease progression and treatment outcomes.

May advise and mentor undergraduate, graduate students and volunteers within the

laboratory

Qualifications And Attributes

  • Board-certified or board-eligible neurosurgeon who has completed an ACGME neurosurgery residency
  • MD degree, but MD-PhD preferred
  • Advanced Studies in Molecular Neurobiology:
    • Demonstrated expertise in the molecular mechanisms underlying neurobiological processes, particularly those related to spinal cord function and injury
  • Completion of a Research Fellowship:
    • Significant postdoctoral research experience, ideally in a field directly related to spinal cord injury, neurodegenerative diseases, or neurostimulation.
  • Proven Track Record in Manuscript Publication:
    • Extensive experience in writing and publishing high-impact scientific papers, demonstrating the ability to disseminate research findings effectively to the scientific community.
  • Publication of Original Peer-Reviewed Research Articles:
    • A robust portfolio of original research articles in reputable peer-reviewed journals, showcasing innovative and impactful contributions to the field.
  • Successful Grant Writing and Funding Acquisition:
    • Demonstrated experience in securing research grants from federal agencies, private foundations, and industry partners. This includes a track record of funded proposals and an understanding of the grant application process.
  • Experience with Clinical-Translational Research:
    • Proven ability to translate basic scientific findings into clinical applications, particularly in the context of spinal cord injuries and related neurological disorders.
  • Proficiency in Developing Biomarkers and Prognostic Tools:
    • Experience in the identification and validation of biomarkers for spinal cord injuries, as well as the development of clinical tools for prognosis in conditions such as tumors, trauma, and degenerative disorders.
  • Leadership and Mentorship Skills:
    • Strong leadership qualities and a commitment to mentoring students, postdoctoral fellows, and volunteers, fostering a collaborative and productive research environment.
  • Collaborative Research Experience:
    • Ability to work effectively within interdisciplinary teams, collaborating with clinicians, researchers, and industry partners to advance research goals.
  • Innovative Research Approaches:
    • A creative and innovative mindset, with the ability to develop and implement cutting-edge research methodologies and technologies in spinal cord research.
  • Commitment to Advancing Patient Care:
    • A dedicated focus on improving therapeutic outcomes for patients with spinal cord injuries, ALS, and SMA through rigorous and impactful research.
  • Professional Engagement:
    • Active participation in relevant professional societies and conferences, staying updated with the latest advancements in the field and contributing to the broader scientific and medical community.
