Assistant Professor

Position Description:


Purpose


The Department of Neurosurgery invites applications for a full-time assistant professor to conduct clinical spine and biomechanics research with focus on finite element modeling. The successful candidate will work within an established laboratory with an existing international reputation. They will add to the internationally recognized research program and participate in the research and service missions of the Department. The candidate will join a vibrant of neurosurgeons, neuroscientist, and biomedical engineering community with potential for additional opportunities in device development, neuroimaging, biomechanical functional testing and translational research.


Primary Functions


RESEARCH RESPONSIBILITIES AND EXPECTATIONS:


Through both collaborative and independent efforts, the Assistant Professor will play a major role in supporting the mission of the Center for Spinal Research and Outcome Lab in the Department of Neurosurgery as part of Neuroscience Institute at MCW. To foster the faculty member’s academic and professional development, core research duties will include:


  • Participate in research program activities and independently perform studies to advance the goals of the principal investigator’s research program.
  • Independently pursue the grant submission process and look for opportunities to submit grants specific to identified research interests that foster independent research program.
  • Assist in development of study design and execution.
  • Assist in large-scale, multi-center biomechanical research database development and management.
  • Participate in dissemination of research findings through scientific publications and professional presentations.
  • Supervise research staff, graduate students, fellows and other trainees involved in our research program.


ACADEMIC RESPONSIBILITIES AND EXPECTATIONS:


The Assistant Professor will participate in educational efforts through the Neuroscience Institute, including supervision and mentoring of graduate/medical students, residents, fellows, and research staff, and community outreach.


Position Requirements:


Knowledge – Skills – Abilities


Knowledge of scientific approach and methodologies. Knowledge and experience with finite element modeling. Ability to develop and follow research methodology and protocol. Knowledge of current technological developments/trends in area of expertise as well as including hands-on experience with human subjects research and data base creation and analysis. Ability to design, organize, and coordinate scientific research projects. Excellent written and oral communication skills. Strong interpersonal skills required.

Specifications


Appropriate education and/or experience may be substituted on equivalent basis


Minimum Required Education: Doctoral Degree


Minimum Required Experience: 2 years


Preferred Education: PhD in biomechanics or other relevant engineering field; completion of post-doctoral fellowship.


Preferred Experience: Experience and knowledge in finite element modeling, computerized data base management, information technology applications, and statistical analysis.
