Assistant Principal

Assist the school principal in the overall administration of instructional programs and campus level operations. Assist in coordinating assigned student activities and services. Assist in the instructional process to ensure student success. Assist the principal and leadership of the campus instructional programs ensuring high standards of instruction and student achievement. Adhere to federal and state laws, as well as, district policies, procedures, and regulations.

Essential Functions

  • Assist with the implementation of curricula and assessments aligned with state standards, including college and career readiness standards.
  • Supervise operations in the principal’s absence following the principal’s guidelines. Share supervisory responsibility for professional staff with the school principal as assigned by the school principal. Supervise teachers, custodians, paraprofessionals, clerical personnel and others as assigned.
  • Assist in implementing high-quality instructional practices among teachers that improve student performance.
  • Help plan daily school activities by participating in the development of class schedules, teacher assignments and extracurricular activity schedules.
  • Monitor and analyze multiple forms of student data to inform instructional and intervention decisions to maximize student achievement.
  • Assist the principal in developing, maintaining and using information systems to review records and track progress.
  • Assist the principal in selecting, placing, and retaining effective teachers and staff.
  • Coach and develop teachers and staff by giving individualized feedback and aligned professional development opportunities.
  • Support collaborative structures and assists in providing leadership opportunities for effective teachers and staff.
  • Assist the principal in observing employee performance, recording observations, and conducting evaluations of all staff.
  • Supervise reporting and monitoring of student attendance and work with the attendance clerk on follow-up investigations. Ensure that Public Education Information Systems (PEIMS) is reported accurately following all rules and regulations.
  • Communicate effectively and develop meaningful and positive relationships with students, staff, parents and community members.
  • Adhere to the Code of Ethics and Standard Practices for Texas Educators in such a way that it demonstrates the moral imperative to educate all children and follow practices and procedures of the district.
  • Support the principal’s vision and promote high expectations for students and staff.
  • Engage families and community members in student learning and encourage parent and community involvement.
  • Encourage an atmosphere of safety that supports the social, emotional, and physical well-being of staff and students.
  • Develop a student discipline management system that uses a variety of student discipline techniques to meet the behavioral and academic needs of individual students.
  • Assist in developing the Campus Improvement Plan (CIP) and campus budgets based on documented program needs.
  • Observe employee performance, records observations and conduct evaluation conferences with staff. Serve as a second appraiser as needed.
  • Ensure that students are adequately supervised during non-instructional periods and extra-curricular activities.
  • Conduct positive and effective conferences on student and school issues with parents, students and teachers.
  • Attendance at the work site is required to meet essential functions of the job.

Virtual And Online Teaching Duties (additional As Assigned)

  • Monitor and plan with teachers to assist them to use appropriate instructional strategies, activities, and resources for distance or virtual learning that reflect understanding of the learning styles and needs of assigned students according to guidelines established by Texas Education Agency, board policies, and administrative regulations.
  • Be available by phone, email, or video conferencing during regular school business hours to confer with district personnel, teachers, students, and/or parents. Participate in meetings as required and/or coordinated by supervisors. Utilize the workday to conduct walk-throughs and evaluate teachers, and address the needs of students and parents both virtually and in-person
  • Communicate with teachers, students and parents via phone, email, website, educator communication app, or video/virtual conferencing.
  • Respond to all correspondence from supervisors, teachers, parents and students within the next business day of receipt.
  • Conduct and participate in virtual ARDS, LPAC and other committee meetings required throughout the school year.

Other Responsibilities

  • Participate in professional development activities as required by the district.
  • Ensure the school rules are uniformly observed and that student discipline is appropriate and equitable in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct and Student Handbook.
  • Responsible for textbooks and equipment; conduct inventory checks; maintain records; and verify receipt of materials.
  • Assist with safety inspections and safety drill practice activities.
  • Coordinate transportation, custodial, cafeteria and other support services.
  • Follow established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties; support district/department goals.
  • Maintain a professional code of ethics and perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Master’s degree; Texas Mid-Management/Principalship certification; appropriate certifications for the evaluation of teachers; three (3) years of full-time classroom teaching experience; bilingual preferred, depending on the needs of the campus and the campus community. Thorough understanding of school operations; strong organizational, communications and interpersonal skills; ability to coordinate campus support operations.

Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors

Able to maintain emotional control under stress. Frequent standing, stooping, bending, twisting and lifting; movement of small stacks of textbooks, media equipment, desks and other classroom equipment. Occasional light lifting and carrying (less than 15 pounds); occasional physical restraint of students to control behavior. Frequent prolonged or irregular hours; work inside and outside (exposure to sun, heat, cold, and inclement weather), exposure to noise. Work with frequent interruptions; maintain emotional control under stress and occasional district-wide and statewide travel. Texas or New Mexico driver’s license; insurable by the district’s auto liability insurance carrier. Subject to the district’s drug and alcohol screening policy and regulation.

Administrator Level 307 or 308 (depending on assignment)
