Job Description

PURPOSE

The Assistant Principal will assist the Elementary School Principal in providing educational and instructional leadership for the assigned school. The Assistant Principal is responsible for helping the Elementary School Principal promote the success and academic growth and achievement of all students by leading an effective and efficient school characterized by a safe, positive environment in which all students receive high quality instruction and supports.

Minimum Requirements

  • Master's degree in Educational Administration or a related field from an accredited college/university
  • Current Illinois Professional Educator’s License with General Administrative or Principal endorsement/qualification and Illinois Teacher Evaluator approval
  • Three (3) or more years of successful experience as a teacher in a public school.
  • Evidence of successful teacher leadership or administrative experience in a public school.
  • Ability to establish and maintain rapport with diverse individuals and groups including students, teachers, parents, administrators and the community
  • Evidence of a high level of integrity, honesty, dependability, and dedication to serving students
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills and a strong work ethic
  • Valid Illinois or Indiana driver’s license with no major violations
  • Acceptable results from background checks and reference checks

Job Duties & Responsibilities

  • Assist the principal in facilitating the development, articulation, implementation and stewardship of a vision of teaching and learning that is shared and supported by the school community.
  • Works collaboratively to implement a shared vision and mission in support of district goals
  • Assists the principal in collecting and using data to identify school goals, assesses organizational effectiveness and promotes organizational learning
  • Assists the principal to create and implement effective school improvement plans to achieve goals and monitors and evaluates progress and revises plans
  • Advocates, nurtures and sustains a school culture and instructional program conducive to student learning and staff professional growth
  • Builds, nurtures and sustains a culture of collaboration, trust, learning, and high expectations among teachers and staff
  • Supports the implementation of a comprehensive, rigorous and coherent curricular program that aligns with the Common Core Standards and district expectations
  • Assists the principal in maximizing time spent on quality instruction, monitoring instruction and providing guidance and professional development to ensure the implementation of best practices
  • Under the leadership of the principal, actively participates in recruiting, interviewing and recommending high quality teaching and staff candidates to the Superintendent of Schools in accordance with district hiring procedures
  • Routinely conducts classroom walkthroughs, informal observations, and formal observations and provides specific, actionable feedback to teachers and staff in accordance with the district teacher evaluation plan
  • Supports assessment and accountability systems to monitor student progress
  • Coordinates school facility maintenance, safety and cleanliness, and implements all required safety and security procedures and drills in collaboration with the Facilities and Safety Coordinator and the principal
  • Coordinates student transportation for the assigned school building including working directly with the school transportation vendor and providing timely and effective communication with families
  • Coordinates food service and the daily breakfast and lunch programs for the assigned school building in collaboration with the food service director
  • With the guidance of the principal, takes a leadership role in establishing school-wide behavior management, discipline and positive behaviors supports necessary to ensure a positive learning environment
  • Actively supports all matters of discipline and implements necessary and appropriate disciplinary actions (including suspension) in accordance with school and district discipline policies
  • Routinely attends multidisciplinary meetings, IEP conferences, Annual Reviews, and Section 504 and other required meetings for students with disabilities assigned to the school
  • Works with principal and the Director of Special Education to ensure that all students with disabilities receive a free appropriate public education in the least restrictive environment
  • Supports the implementation of special education procedures that comply with all laws, policies and regulations under the guidance of the principal and Director of Special Education
  • Supports the maintenance of student health, wellness, and regular attendance of all students with the assistance of the school nurse and social worker
  • Proactively communicates with families to promote student learning and open communication
  • As assigned by the principal, approves requisitions for budgets in areas of responsibility and appropriately manages school activity funds
  • Compiles information and accurately completes all required plans and reports in a timely fashion
  • Assists the principals with all school-level organization, administration, scheduling, programs and planning under the supervision of the Superintendent of Schools
  • Demonstrates high standards of ethics and integrity in interactions and relationships with staff, students, families and community members and maintains confidentiality of staff and student information as required by law
  • Executes school district policies and procedures and the Superintendent’s directives
  • Assumes other duties as assigned by the Principal and/or Superintendent

Physical Requirements/Environmental Conditions

  • Requires prolonged sitting and standing.
  • Requires moving throughout a large school building and outdoor campus area.
  • Requires stooping, bending, reaching and lifting.
  • Requires physical exertion to manually move, lift, carry, pull, or push objects or materials.
  • Must work in stressful and hectic environments.
  • Requires the ability to handle multiple tasks with frequent interruptions.
  • Requires evening and/or weekend work.
  • Requires travel within the school district and may require travel outside of the school district.
  • Must have the ability to meet daily attendance requirements.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

Contractual employment (annual). Ten months a year (Taft), Eleven months a year (Eisenhower, Madison), Twelve months a year (Coolidge), with holidays and vacation (12-month employees) per district policy. Salary commensurate with skills and qualifications.

EVALUATION

Performance will be evaluated annually by the Superintendent based on the Illinois Standards for School Leaders and performance on organizational, professional growth and student growth goals.
